Very disappointing, but entirely unsurprising.

I suppose we can hope that they modernise and liberalise over the next decade, so it's less of an atrocious regime by the time the World Cup comes around.

But that sort of hope is exactly why they're doing things like this, trying to get people to forget how they've acted with distractions.

Ten years in advance is bonkers anyway. I'm guessing one of the reasons the Saudi's are the only ones bidding is they're the only ones who are confident they'll be able to afford it then. Money no object obviously.

Suppose infantino and co. are well aware they quite possibly won't be in office by then and therefore don't want to miss out on the backhanders.

I still think an Australian WC would be great; they really should have had the 2022 one.

I do wonder what influenced the Aussie withdrawal though.
Did they get a whisper from FIFA that they weren't getting it whatever they did, or were a few backhanders paid directly from Saudi to persuade them to withdraw?

Anyway, no chance of FIFA rejecting this on ethical grounds. They took Qatari money; it's a smaller step then to taking Saudi money.

I think most World Cups are heading for a December tournament as its just getting too hot round the world in June/July to host it.
