Sarina Wiegman

My wife just pointed something out.

After all the effort to get women’s football the attention it deserved for this World Cup, it’s appalling that the most memorable news story is about a man.
While I don't disagree, it's not like FIFA have gone "bloody hell, too much attention is being paid to women's sport. Quick, get a man to do something newsworthy".

It's one bloke being a d*ck. Which has actually shone a light on probably a few other blokes being dicks and cultural issues at the top of the sport (not that anyone paying attention had any doubts that the suits running the game are bunch of nob heads/idiots).

Its a shame it's taken attention away from the sporting side, but actually it's an important story and will ultimately hopefully have a positive impact on women's football by bringing this sort of behaviour out into the open and challenging it.

It was a woman who rightly made this a story by taking a stand. I'm glad she did. Shame she had to mind.

On top of that it sounds like there's been a lot of this kind of behaviour behind the scenes in Spanish Women's football which is why it has blown up.

I'm not even certain that a swift apology would have helped. This has obviously been simmering for some time.

Yeah absolutely. Does seem like there's been a culture where this has been seen to be acceptable.

It's probably a good thing the idiot hasn't apologised and dug himself into a hole. They might have been able to sweep it under the carpet otherwise.

FIFA and the media haven’t deliberately done that, you’re right. But his actions have taken all of the joy out of Spain‘s victory and will be the single thing that is most memorable about this World Cup.

It absolutely had to be challenged and, that act, will be a force for change.

Divide and conquer. It's what the press are employed to do.
