Sounds like he’s had a really rough time since his injury with us. Had no idea it had progressed like this.

I did wonder why it had gone completely quiet on his front, I'd checked periodically to see if he'd made an appearance again over the years.

Poor guy.
Hope he can salvage his career.

I completely forgot about him. He joined with a really big reputation as a flying wingback.

Two and a half years injured must be horrific for a footballer. I guess he could look at or even have a chat with Watmore. I know his was 2 separate injuries but he was out for 2 years and must have hit some really low points.

You wouldn't know it now. He's by far Boro's most mobile player and runs further than anyone. It just shows you can come back👏

The fact his contract is up must be a real concern. No wage coming in and I guess he will lose many medical benefits? I heard warnock say Joe Bennett did his knee a few weeks ago and out for a year and no club from June.

Interesting to see this as it is only around a week or so since his name popped into my head and I looked him up. I actually presumed he'd gone out on loan again over the past 12-18 months, which is sort of why I had a look for him, but figured something bad must've happened due to the lack of appearances he's made. To read that he hasn't played football since he was with Boro is awful. It feels like a lifetime ago. Fingers crossed he can return to fitness and make a career for himself.

Really harsh. If they're still undecided on offering him a contract or not hopefully not as bleak as his manager makes out. Sounds like he might actually be not too far off?

Could happen to any player. Always think players are taking a risk when they choose to run their contracts down (appreciate that is not the case with McQueen). An injury like that without a club must be even harder to come back from. Unless you've already made millions and can afford to risk it.

Greed overrides common sense in some cases (Matty Bates always springs to mind).

I wish him the best of luck and really hope he can rescue his career.

ACL injuries aren't the career ending event that they once were, but its not entirely clear what the current issues are. It seems Southampton have been great with him, which doesn't surprise me - I've always thought they were a proper club.

I remember this happening because I vividly remember being at the game and you could hearing him scream at the time of injury.

Sounded and looked awful at the time, but I'd have never imagined it be as bad as this.

Such awful news.

really feel for the guy, hopefully he gets the miracle.

Sounds terrible. Lets hope he can get his life back on track again - firstly to be able to walk, train and then play football.
His knee got infected after his first op I think and there been complications since. Hopefully he can stay in the game in some other capacity but it doesn’t sound good for the lad. So promising as well. Pretty sure Wenger was a big fan at some point.

You'd hope he's looked at the recovery Santi Carzola made. He had an operation on his ankle ligaments, was then told he might not walk properly again, nevermind play football. Finished up his contract at Arsenal and then had arguably one of his best ever seasons when he signed for Villarreal, even earning a recall to the Spanish national team.

Robbed of a brilliant career he was. Fantastic footballer.
