Ryanair issue?

Morning all, Mrs WG and I are due to fly to Budapest next month for our 10th wedding anniversary; God only knows how she's managed to put up with me that long but that's a different matter!

Hungary are not currently allowing entry to UK citizens unless you fit a very specific set of circumstances that don't apply to us and tourism is certainly not allowed. However, Ryanair are still sending the currently scheduled flights to Budapest. I'm guessing they'll claim the flight went ahead so unable to get a refund even though we wouldn't be allowed entry? And idea what the current rules are around this, they have me bamboozled and sadly I think Ryanair will effectively end up keeping our money for nothing.

Thanks for any pointers or advice.

WeeGord we too were due to fly to Budapest but with EasyJet out of Manchester however they have cancelled all of their flights to the city in both July and August. I imagine they've done that because they believe there's little prospect of being able to take passengers out there.

We were able to go because we met a certain set of circumstances i.e. we had tickets for the F1 Grand Prix and we had booked accommodation.

After Easyjet cancelled on us we were still considering flying with Ryanair however the host country's testing protocols were ridiculous. We had to have two separate negative PCR tests, one to enter the country on the Friday and one to enter the circuit on the Sunday.

Needless to say we've just sacked it off.

We had flights booked with Ryanair and their company policy was not to give refunds but allow you to reschedule your flights for a later time without a fee. Unfortunately we found they only allowed us to rebook flights at increased prices to the ones advertised on the internet. Claiming these were "internet" prices only.
Their reputation is well learnt.

It's not illegal to fly to amber list countries so, if the flight isn't cancelled, then it's unlikely you can get a cancellation refund. Double vaccinated people won't even have to quarantine after 19 July. You could try to see if they allow you to change the booking. If not, and you cancel, I think you can reclaim the government tax part of the fare.

It could be that Ryanair will cancel the flight - then it's really up to them how they deal with it. No doubt they'll ask you to have a credit note to spend with them. If they don't and you're unable to fly due to the restrictions you can try a chargeback (debit card) or a section 75 refund (credit card) depending on how you purchased the tickets. Failing that if you had a Travel Insurance policy in place before you made the purchase, depending on when the tickets were bought, you may be able to claim there. If you booked the trip after 20/03/20 then chances are you won't have any cover for covid delays/cancellations on the Travel Insurance unfortunately

Thanks for the messages so far, thank you. @bear66 it's not an issue for us leaving the UK, it's an issue that Hungary will not allow us entry so can't see that Ryanair will have any legal grounds for keeping our money. That doesn't mean they won't try.

According to their own flight schedule they still have flights to Hungary in the coming days from the UK which haven't been cancelled. This is despite Hungary not allowing for any UK tourists to enter.

As mentioned above I had easyJet flights and they are very efficient at cancelling the flight - Ryanair maybe a different story.Have you spoken with them - I would be surprised if they still run the flight as by the sounds of things it will be pretty empty.

if and when they do cancel it - hopefully a replacement will be painless. With easy jet we could book any date and airport writhing the same country (greece) for no extra charge.

hope it gets sorted out.

Getting in touch with Ryanair is more difficult than finding Lord Lucan. They truly are an horrendous company to deal with.

Ryanair basically saying that the flight is still scheudled so that Hungarian citizens can travel there. Regardless of me not being allowed entry I will not be given any refund or voucher. SCUM AIRLINE.

One of the many reasons I wouldn't give the shyster that runs Ryanair a penny of my money.

I would rather pay KLM £300 that give Ryanair £50.

If I am getting on a plane, its because I want to go somewhere, I want to actually go there, at a time I have chosen and not play Russian Roulette.

Am I going to fly? Where will I land?, will it gat cancelled? will I get my money back? Balls to all of that.

Surely there are laws / regulations in place to stop airlines doing this? They really are the most horrendous airline I have ever dealt with by a long, long chalk. They are effectively stealing people's money and we appear to be able to do nothing about it.

I feel for you man, but this is exactly the business model of Ryanair etc. They cant make enough money from offering cheap headline airfares, they need the revenue from unseen booking charges, unfair delay and cancellation charges, heinous excess baggage charges etc.

But people keep using them because they are "cheap".

Last March, me and the wife were booked to go to Prague for a long weekend, MME> Amsterdam> Prague. 72 hours before the departure, the Czech government banned all incoming flights for non nationals. The flights from Teesside to Amsterdam were still ok, but we didnt want to go to Amsterdam. KLM were more than happy to issue a refund or travel voucher for the entire trip. Not a chance on earth that Ryanair would have done the same.
