Ryan Giles

It will be quite interesting watching how he gets on.

He’s just a former Boro loanee to me so all this ‘great lad wished all the luck’ doesn’t come into it, he will be getting a lot of money to suffer relegation with Luton.

On a separate note I think Boro could learn from Chelsea in how to deal mentally with physical spoiling teams like Luton. From an early stage they played on their fragile lack of belief in their own ability and kept on top of them. Easy when you have players like Sterling but you knew from very early on that only one team was going to win that game, there was no messing about, the footballing team believed in themselves.

I thought he was OK overall @ Chelsea - he played more left wing back, so had more chance to get forward.

First time Chelsea scored 3 goals @ home since November suggests Luton are not going to keep many clean sheets this season unlike last season. I just don't think Luton have the quality to stay up.

They certainly havent the quality to stay up and yet they were better than us last season. Shows the gulf in class between the divisions. I am looking forward to assessing Luton's ability against lesser teams than Chelsea and Brighton.

CD - Yes there is an enormous gap between say a 16th team in the Premier League and a top Championship team.

Certainly £50m investment needed to stay up from many Championship sides who hadn't played in the PL for a while.

I thought we were as good as Luton in the second half of last season - very fine margins on who gets promoted in the play offs.

Didn't play particularly well, delivery was very poor, defensively not good. 4/10.

As a converted winger to defender he improved during his Boro spell, but he needs time to develop further - which he's unlikely to get in the PL with Luton getting pumped most weeks.

And a year is a long time in football. Getting relegated with Luton, probably/potentially as one of the worse teams in the PL.....not going to enhance his reputation unless he's a clear standout player.

Odd career move, good for his bank balance but long term.....🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️

Looks like a bad attitude when he got subbed off too, you don't need that in a relegation battle side
I didn't see last night, but a few times last season when he was subbed off in a game we were losing he did things that could be seen as a bad attitude. He'd be shaking his head or look across as though he was questioning the decision, then take his time instead of getting off the pitch quickly. But I think it was just frustration and his desire to help turn the game around. Not sure if last night was beyond that though.

I want him to do well, but I think it's a huge step up that he isn't quite ready for. He does risk being written off at that level if he doesn't improve quickly.

He’s probably on triple the wages he was on at boro and a massive signing on fee
He’s laughing financially so will be fine with where that takes him
Yes he will be maybe more. I read he was only on about 7k at wolves. But, job satisfaction is important too, he won’t be happy being blamed for two goals a game and not getting assists and losing every week, he’ll probably pine for the days we were ripping it up

I think it was a more questionable signing for Luton than questionable decision from Giles. He's getting premier league football and wages. Can't really blame him for that.

But Luton, a fairly defensive side anyway, who will definitely be looking to grind out results and frustrate teams in the top division have signed a left back who came to everyone's attention because of his attacking capabilities.

Did they actually do any research on him at all or just go "everyone says that Giles lad is really good, let's sign him"?

Just seemed an odd signing for a side who need to try and be solid defensively to have any chance at all. Signing a left back whose biggest weakness is defending 🤷🏼‍♂️
You would have thought some hulking Scandinavian left back would have been a better fit for Luton.

Some dicksplits on here, he didn’t have the best game, clearly playing to orders though. His corner kicks were poor mind. 4/10 but that is partly because he was rarely passed to
Is he still stood at the corner flag waiting for someone to pass him the ball?
No wonder his delivery is poor.

We, and Giles knew that Luton would take a few beatings when he went there.

So what? Players shouldn't run from that. Few aspire to playing at as low a level as possible for the easy wins and to make themselves look as good as possible

It made footballing and financial sense for Giles to go to Luton. Good luck to him.

Even if he gets found out week in week out, he won't die wondering.
