How can the population of Russia in 2022 be conned and lied to by a vertically challenged maniac. The existence for the average Russian must be horrendous. No free speech, no internet, no independent TV. We moan at our government being corrupt, but we live in utopia compared to Russians.

Is China any different too?

I read about a week ago that a.lot of Ukrainians have hatred for all Russians and don't accept they aren't aware

There is so much wrong with this country, so much more could be done to make the system function better for the people. I expect we all have a different version of what utopia would be. For me, politically I would like to see us move to a more democratic proportional representation electoral system. The current 2 party system is devoid of fairness and keeps being tweaked by the tories to help them retain power.

How can the population of Russia the United Kingdom in 2022 be conned and lied to by a vertically challenged blonde haired ego maniac. The existence for the average Russian Brit must be horrendous. No free speech, no internet, no independent TV, no fuel, no food , no right to gather to protest. We dont moan at our government being corrupt, but we the Government live in utopia compared to Russians the average Brit.
There, I have fixed it for you

Wait until the next general election. You'll see first hand how it's possible to fool enough people to remain in power and subdue the rest. It's the path we are headed down and, with a media pretyt much 80% controlled by the right wing/Murdoch, it's one we can go down really quickly.

Control the media, and the rulers can put out whatever spin they want out there to their people. Admittedly that must be more difficult in this digital age than say in Germany in the 1930s.

Also a lot of Ukrainians are ethnically Russian. SO they do care. There is propaganda on both sides to be fair. The Ukrainians will be painting all of Russia as an evil empire. Same as the Russians spreading propaganda to deny it.

I think it still holds true for mainstream media. You can put what you like on facebook and twitter and the impact will be minimal. But if you control the narrative on TV and in the papers, even online, you control enough of the population. The reach is much broader. As we have seen with the current levels of corruption. You only need to convince a tiny, easily malleable group of people and you can retain control of the coutnry

Agreed , but Ukraine are invaded - so I hope their propaganda helps them to get more weapons to get at the dictator's army. I think the less.bad performance of the dictator's army in the south and east might be because they had more ethnic Russians there? And they are areas already held or next to Russia - so easier to supply than a 40 mile target for Ukraine

I don't like 2 party politics either but some countries using PR seem to finish up with endless coalition governments, failed coalitions and too frequent elections. Don't know what the answer is but for some things like energy policy we need long term continuous strategy not changing tack every election period.

I agree with the OP. We can do so.much better than our current GOVT. But I do think we sometimes use histrionics to describe the state of the UK. It should be so much better and less corrupt than it is, but sometime we make it sound a lot worse than it actually is and perspective is needed. Having said that thank christ we live in a society that is allowed to challenge power, even if that power does ignore us and squirm off the hook like a slippery turd

Yeah, in very rough and only slightly correct terms: East of the Dnipro is ethnically Russian and west is ethnically central European. Much easier to target the south and east, especially is they have already annexed Crimea and have Russian rebels controlling the Donbass. That being said, the only Ukrainian friend I know is ethnically Russian, both her parents are Russian and she's from the South East and she is as angry as anyone else at the Russians. I guess it's way more complex than I could comprehend.

I'm not saying it is as bad as these place. But it clearly could be and it is even more clearly heading in that direction. If massive countries like Russia, China and Turkey, can control their giant populations through manipulation of the media then it's entirely possible it could happen here. And it's as clear as day that this is the direction the current government wants to take: Defund the BBC, Privatise Channel 4 etc. We aren't a full controlled authoritarian state yet but we are strongly heading in that direction.

Same for me, whilst I'm not advocating that the UK benchmarks with China, Russia etc in these issues it is utterly depressing to see that we're sliding towards that model, rather than away from it. Progress is vague word which can mean many things to different people but it definitely feels like we're seeing regression in almost every facet of society right now.
