If you really want to know why the Russians were involved over there you will find plenty of literature on it. Once the Russians became involved the West did.

As for the mercenaries from across the world that Thor has witnessed, who is paying for them is the important question.

Good point well made.

In all honesty it's not our intervention that ruined it all.. it's a mix of all everyone from the US all the way to Russia, which has then paved the way for religious zealots to take hold and totally destroy that and many other nations in the area.
You can see similar imagery from Syria in the 60s.
 
The west were backing the mujahideen before Russia entered the fray. They were trying to overthrow a modernising secular government and the west financed this. There is a strong argument that Russia were justified in being there.
 
We had a similar post war period, overseen by both Tory and Labour governments prior to the neoliberalism era we were persuaded would be the cure to all ills but has in fact been anything but.

Those behind it have got what they wanted, a working class more divided than ever.

And the Soviet Union bordered Afghanistan. They won't have relished the idea of Islamic fundamentalists taking control in Afghanistan.
