Off to Rome with the Mrs for a long weekend a week today, Ive been before she hasnt, so will be doing the usual tourist stuff for her Vatican, Colosseum, castel st angelo, Pantheon, Fountain etc, anyone recommend anything abit different thats not as commonly known or any quiryky little restaurants off the main tourist track?

Get the bus out to the catacombs, you get guided by the nuns, I found it really interesting.

Going up onto the roof of St Pauls is worth doing too, worth it just for realising how old it all is by the architecture of the building.

Go to Testaccio - very cool and laid back - Market and nice places to eat.

go to St Pauls outside the Walls - its in a district called Ostience - again interesting away from the usual - great street art - opposite the railway station is Eataly - a four storey complex of food !! and its air-conditioned.

the museum capatolini has a roof cafe . you neednt go in the museum as there is a side door to the cafe only.
Best views of the city by far.
buy your tickets for the coliseum from the shop in the forum. no need to queue at the colloseum then.

It was the same for the Vatican last time I went, theres a couple of little tourist shops out the front one is ran by a Lazio Ultra, talked football with him for abit and I then bought some queue jumper Audio tour tickets off him, i paid less than the standard entry as well as he gave me a bit of discount. Hope hes still there.

There‘s a Subbuteo shop near the Pantheon 😀.

Was going to mention the dome at the big churchy place, great views. I’d also recommend going into one of the shops near the Vatican that sell equipment for the clergy, if only for 5 minutes.

The Palatine Hill is amazing, download an audio guide and just wander around.

Well this is spooky- so are we! Some interesting replies already.

Strangely, not sure I want to spend time in the Vatican museums but not to do so will mean missing the Sistine Chapel. Decisions.

You spend quite a long time getting to the Sistine chapel .

if you’ve seen the mona lisa in the Louvre, you will know what I mean ..but the Sistine chapel takes longer .

buy the best colosseum tour, go underneath. Don’t just pay to get in and look about, it’s a one time thing so get the best experience there is

If the Holy Father is in Rome this weekend, he usually does a blessing outside the Vatican on Sunday.
There's hundreds there with flags of all sorts of countries.

Edit-scrub around that...it's been cancelled.

This was a good shout, today we went to the Capuchin Crypt first thing then got the bus over to the catacombs of st callixtus and St Sebastian.
