Riverside Boro Brick Road

The Forum has a meeting with the company that were responsible for the bricks that people bought and had names etched into at the Riverside. We will be exploring possible options on how they can be renovated for the future.
I know that many treat those bricks as memorial to family that have passed on and visit them to pay their respects. So I think that is something I am keen to stress with the company - how can we best preserve and conserve those names for the future. We have been told recently that it was chemicals in the air and not wear and tear from walking on them that has caused their poor preservation. The company has put in place many walls, at stadiums like Coventry, Bolton, Sunderland (off the top of my head) as well other brick roads so they should have answers as far as that is concerned.
I believe there was only ever a ten year guarantee, that was my understanding and I do have a brick. But because of the special status as memorials it is important that we do what we can to look after them. We could record them digitally as well and make a digital record and map available.
But are there specific points people would like raising about the future upkeep of the Boro Brick Road?

This is good to see. I don't have a brick, but I was up at the stadium a few hours before the Chelsea game and noticed how many of the bricks are practically unreadable these days. It would be great to have them properly restored and preserved.

At last, this is good news.
I have a brick, and I have to say that I have a hell of a job finding it these days.
I’m just glad I took photos of it when it was relatively new.
I hope the renovation gets the go ahead.
Thanks Rob.

on match days , fence it off, so that the main footfall isnt trampling all over it, introduce walkways so that fans can still see and observe their own brick shrines - it will require a little redesign of the location, but perfectly do-able.
We have been told it is nothing to do with people walking over them that has caused the erosion but chemicals in the air. Going to check that out. There are brick walkways elsewhere installed by the same company at roughly the same time, how have they weathered is a question.

Main constituent and composition of bricks are silica, Alumina, lime, iron oxide ,magnesia, Sulphur trioxide and water.

Ask what the detailed % composition is of the bricks they are using for the memorial - is it a different composition to other bricks in use at the same location. (it should look like this)

Ask what chemicals in the air have they identified as causing the corrosion ? - is it corrosion of the brick or of the paint/product used for the wording? - confirm exactly what that paint/product is - others (H&S committee / Council) need to be made aware of the answer, cos what its doing to humans, wildlife, flora and fauna.

Ask what type of brick are they using, is it most appropriate for the job, is it price related for their use or was it specifically detailed by a designer or engineer - if not who ? - and the same for the paint/product.

I am really pleased to hear something is being done about this. I placed one in memory of my dad. The club did a marvellous job in providing the opportunity and anything that can be done to preserve them and renovate would be brilliant. I am sure those of us that bought one would, where we still can, offer to contribute again, I would anyway. Thanks Rob and please keep us updated on this project, this news has put a smile on my face today, I may celebrate and even allow the fire to be switched on.

Access to a digital map of the bricks would be great as I've tried twice recently to find my brick and also my Grandad's who is no longer with us. Couldn't find either! What I did find though is that a lot of them are in very poor condition and the writing is unreadable on quite a lot of them. This is probably why I can't find them!

Thanks for looking into it though as like you say a lot of people use them as memorials for loved ones so it's important that they can be restored.

We did something similar in memory of my dad and would be more than happy to contribute in any way towards restoration etc….

Good work. I don’t have a brick but it’ll be great if they can be restored for those that do.

IF it turned out footfall was a factor then perhaps they could be dug up and rebuilt as a wall.

Hi Rob, thanks for this
I did raise this on here the season before Karankas team won promotion, asking if I could purchase a brick for my late brother (& now my dad)
I would dearly love to have something of them at the Riverside which I would be able to visit during games, the club were hoping to do something if promoted but it never got off the mark

Hopefully they can do a wall instead in the future, footfall must make a difference to the condition of them. Sunderland have a wall and it looks really smart, it would be good for the club to consider. Sure plenty would be willing to buy another

Our problem will be the weathering of the bricks more than footfall as a wall wouldn’t get half as much snow or ice on it.

Were they engraved or just painted names? I can’t remember. I have one somewhere. It was black or gold if I remember correctly? Not sure it it was cut into the brick before painting.

If it was cut into the brick can’t they just be touched up?

I have a "double" brick with gold lettering - had it since they first introduced the Boro Brick Road.

I tend to visit the stadium on non match days just to check on the brick's condition , if I'm on the scooter I'll use a cloth and give it a once over. It's lasting the course so far.

Appreciate not everybody lives as close to the stadium as I do or can only get there unless on match days.

I have thought about tidying up the gold lettering myself although it's not become a necessity as yet.

likewise I have a “memorial” brick too which
I’ve not managed to find on my last number of visits. I suspect the wording has completely washed away. I would love to see restoration of any kind and even would pay for a new one.
