Rise of the Nazis

Loved the series which should, IMO, be compulsive viewing in all Secondary Schools.
The comparisons with Trump in terms of his influence on the Amercan people are laughable TBH.
As lunatic as he is he's nowhere near as sharp as Hitler. As dangerous as Hitler.....? While he has his finger over that button very much so.

There are obviously some comparisons. Just because Trump and our current car crash of a government are light years away from being as bad as Hitler doesn't mean there aren't similarities in how they've tried to influence the population by blaming minority groups for everything and stoking hate, division and being jingoistic.

To ignore this on the grounds that hitler was far, far worse (which he was) so therefore you can't compare is lazy and dangerous. It won't have the same consequences thank God, but at this rate we're still headed into some pretty dark territory all the same. We've regressed as a society without doubt.

There is comparisons with the people/voters, easily led down the path of right wing hatred and racism. Were the German people sorry for the atrocities afterwards.

Are we seeing a huge global economic depression?
Are we seeing hyperinflation?
Are the US and UK reeling under ridiculously harsh economic sanctions after the end of a World War?
Is the nation bitter and resentful at the way it was treated when committing to an armistice?
Is Europe concerned about the westward spread of Communism?
Are large numbers of people starving?
Are we seeing virulent anti Semitism?
Does the UK or US need "room to grow" outside of territorial borders?

The answer to all of those is no, or not really, so it's not the same.
If the answer to all of those is no, then it is all the more alarming that we are nevertheless seeing a rise. Regardless of whether the conditions are right, certain groups have an appetite for it and are quite capable of engineering it, if we close our eyes and deny what we are witnessing.

I can’t see how you can compare the ‘rise of the Nazis’ to what’s happening now. If so, who are the Nazis?? Which side??

It's harder for people on the right to critically think?

There is a difference in the way the Left and Right process information in the brain apparently. I’m making a very broad generalisation as we are all hugely susceptible to biases, heuristics and cognitive dissonance. So depending on the issue both Left and Right are likely to have to fight against their instinctive emotional response.

However studies have found that there are differences in the way we think and this is backed up by the parts of the brain that are accessed as shown in MRI scans, where different parts of the brain light up.

Because of this, the Right are slightly more prone to heightened emotional responses and as critical thinking is about cutting this out of the process, it’s tougher for them to do.

It’s really interesting and something I’ve wanted to raise for a while and to then link to some major political decisions - brexit, Iraq, Covid in particular.

I’ll get around to it and link to some studies, hopefully next week. Our approach to risk is one big difference apparently.

Have u seen how the minorities have flourished under trump? The hitler comparison is ridiculous

You sound like a chauvinist talking about women.

The democrats are socialists, dear oh dear. What is happening to people?

There are many republicans opposed to Trump who would have nothing to do with socialism but who will be voting democrat in November.

For me this election is not about right or left it’s about right or wrong.

His base either can’t see or most likely don’t care that he is an immoral crook.

Hitler came second in an election once. I’m not sure he would have got too many votes if he had stood again in 1945.

What is happening in America is tragic to see.

I was liking the fact he was a democrat in his youth ( as he fund raised for Clinton) not that democrats are socialists unless you are refer to Bernie 😎

Every generation must remain vigilant and fight for the basics, Health, housing, jobs, social welfare, food & all against the rise of Fascism, otherwise they will take those basics away - and deliver the Fascism.

i believe we may have lost a generation, they run by the name of the 'Thatcher Generation'.
