Never really cared for him as a drag act. But as a Radio presenter, TV host and for sure his work in promoting animal welfare he was brilliant. RIP Paul.
Shocked by hearing this when I put the TV on this morning. Really liked Paul....found him very funny and seemed such a lovely person to be around but had a very sharp tongue when needed. Plus he did outstanding work for Battersea dogs home. RIP
Saw him live in the clubs in the 90s in London principally Madame Jojos in Soho.In those days he went under the name of Paul Monroe. Also remember him supporting Vic Reeves Big Night Out stage shows. His mind was razor sharp as Lily Savage and thought he was restricted as a comic on TV although he made an excellent living with the portrayal on screen. RIP Paul.
Great guy all round by all accounts. His humour and quick wit always had me laughing. But his legacy has to be his charity work over the years. He really was a shining light for all the charities he worked with
His greatest gift? How much empathy he showed everyday folk. A genuine guy who cared for humans - as well as animals. Genuinely saddened to hear this news.
I was both shocked and saddened when I saw this post and it feels like we've all lost a true friend.
As others have said, I couldn't take to Lilly Savage but loved his daily chat shows on the TV and always had to have the mother in law sat in front of the box in time for it starting.
The work he carried out for Battersea Dog Trust was first class and I am sure there are thousands of dogs out there that have been re-homed because of him. Whilst watching him on that show you always felt he would take one of the dogs home with him and I am sure he often did. Maybe it was the unconditional love that the dogs offered him and that he longed for that won his heart.
Paul also had a talent for making others feel at ease and bringing the best out of everyone. The world is a sadder place without him being in it.
My sister met him the morning after she had seen him in a show in the street. She started showing him photos of her dog, he said it's cold out here and took her and her husband for a coffee. She named her next dog Lily.
