RIP Frank Worthington

He was one of my heroes as a lad. So much style and skill.
His autobiography 'One hump or two' is a must read. A lot different to some of the synthetic offerings these days, as you might expect. Funnily enough, I've just finished (another) read of 'Bring back the Birch' Alan Birchenall's book where he get's a fair bit of exposure.
A legend with character.

He was a wonderful player. Scored many memorable goals but above and beyond he was an entertainer. He would put on a show off the pitch as well as on. Boro were linked to him when we were promoted under Big Jack. That would have been quite something.
Worthington's Leicester were the flair and glamour team of the old top division and Frank was their star performer but he sprinkled a bit of football showbizz wherever he played. Audacious flicks, tricks and ridiculous goals would follow, with a glint or wink in his eye, a Stetson on his head and an Elvis song down the club, born to be a true entertainer, a showman, crowd pleaser and an all time great of the game.
Frank Worthington RIP
I'm pretty sure we were linked with him again in 81 or 82 when he was coming back from playing in USA. But he went to Leeds instead.

At Uni in early 90s Frank Worthington was the guest speaker at a sportmans dinner we were at. During a break in proceedings discussions in the toilets were boisterously centered around the good looking lady accompanying him. Cubicle door opens and out walks Frank Worthington to the surprise of everyone. Washes his hands and turns to us all, nods and winks and saunters out without saying a word.
He couldn't have failed to hear the roars of laughter that followed.

If you watch that wonder goal v Ipswich even the ref is clapping on his way back to the centre circle

R.I.P. Frank

I loved his approach and attitude to the game and to life in general - one of those select bunch of players who, regardless what team they were playing for, I'd pay to watch.

An entertainer like Stan Bowles Tony Currie and Rodney Marsh. Never fitted the International set up for England.
I have a good book that is probably long OOP but worth tracking down if you can find it. It called The Mavericks by Rob Steen and it has chapters on Stan Bowles, Tony Currie, Charlie George, Alan Hudson, Rodney Marsh, Peter Osgood and Frank Worthington. A really entertaining read.

This seems like every week we have one of our childhood heroes passing away. How many of us here pretended we were Worthington n the school playground and even tried to attempt that goal above. The goal itself sums up Worthington perfectly.

RIP

John Hickton for me Norman

But yes a lot of big names in our era growing up

What a player he was. Scorer of one of the greatest goals ever seen for me. Loved seeing him play.
RIP Frank.

I notice that with a lot of the famous footballers who have died recently the headlines say they have died after 'A LONG ILLNESS',

I imagine in most cases this long illness is Alzheimers or another neurological disorder.

I do think to raise greater awareness of this major issue in Football and Rugby it would really help if the headlines could be more specific with what the long illness was, clearly only if the families concerned are open to doing this!
