RIP Frank Worthington

A little before my time but have seen that clip of the goal v Ipswich numerous times and it is truly a great goal. RIP.

There were three brothers if I remember correctly - all had FL: careers. One of them did quite a lot of scouting but I forget who for

Frank had been unwell for a number of years, 10+ maybe He used to be on the football speakers circuit and was a fairly entertaining listen

He was a wonderful player. Scored many memorable goals but above and beyond he was an entertainer. He would put on a show off the pitch as well as on. Boro were linked to him when we were promoted under Big Jack. That would have been quite something.
Worthington's Leicester were the flair and glamour team of the old top division and Frank was their star performer but he sprinkled a bit of football showbizz wherever he played. Audacious flicks, tricks and ridiculous goals would follow, with a glint or wink in his eye, a Stetson on his head and an Elvis song down the club, born to be a true entertainer, a showman, crowd pleaser and an all time great of the game.
Frank Worthington RIP

He was the epitome of 70’s football/rock star crossover. Always liked the lad. Top night when I ended up being his “unofficial official translator” at a Scottish football awards dinner. His admiration of just how hard John Craggs was after he kicked him was a thing to behold.

RIP

Worthington began his career as a forward for Huddersfield Town in 1966 before playing for Leicester City, Bolton Wanderers, Birmingham City, Leeds United, Sunderland, Southampton, Brighton and Hove Albion, Tranmere Rovers, Preston North End, Stockport County and Galway United.

I saw him play at Arnold Town (in north Nottingham) for Birmingham in a friendly and he was just fantastic. The ground was at the bottom of our road Gedling Rd behind the Friar Tuck pub.
Stetson, leather, suede; it was like he was going off to film a Spaghetti Western after the match.

RIP one of my heroes.

Frank born 1948
Bob born 1947 played 12 games for Boro and over 250 for Notts County
Dave born 1945 played nearly 500 league apps for mainly Grimsby and others
Daves son Gary also played nearly 200 league apps including Darlo and is currently Head of Player Recruitment at Manchester City
A real football family

Sad news, bit of a character and one of the first non Boro players I can remember. His focus in Shoot magazine was an eye opener for me as an eight year old!

Remember him scoring a fantastic goal for Bolton on Sunday highlights. Love the quote below..

"His manager at Huddersfield Town and Bolton Wanderers described him as "the working man's George Best."

There were similarities on and off the field!
