Rich person /people you respect

I had the pleasure of meeting this man through work a few years ago. A self made millionaire and he pretty much ploughed all of his wealth into ’Daft as a brush cancer care’. If memory serves me correct he was living in a terraced house in Wallsend. I was totally humbled to hear his story. I see he’s due to retire next year, aged 80.

Admittedly I knew he would be a controversial pick and would spark some debate. The decision to buy Twitter seems to have been driven by his ego and a belief that he's uniquely in a position to prevent the hard left or right from controlling the narrative in the way the media traditionally has. He clearly didn't have the time or the skills to run the company successfully. Failure in one industry does not mean all of his other achievements are not worthy of respect though. Nikola Tesla himself failed spectacularly many times.

Here is a quick list of companies he's been key to the success of either as a founder or early investor with hands on involvement in key decisions. It's as impressive and varied as anyone else I can think of. Whatever you think of him as a man, the world would be very different right now if he hadn't been successful.

Tesla
SpaceX
PayPal
The Boring Company
Neuralink
OpenAI (ChatGPT)
Zip2
SolarCity
Musk foundation

Good friends with Jeffrey Epstein for a start, large part of his wife divorcing him.

Bit of a fraud as well, sold this myth that he's self made but it helps when your mum is on the board of IBM when you're selling software to them.

Also he came up with a plan to block out the sun a few years ago if we're talking about potential bond villains.

Sure he changed the world but that doesn't make him a good person
