Referee

Attackers aren't allowed within 1m of the wall at a free kick anymore. Can't remember where he was exactly but presume that is the rule he's broken.
I thought the wall had to have 4 men in it for that rule, I could be wrong. If I remember correctly they only had 3, also the ref normally enforces that before the free kick. I’ve only ever seen it punished when a player moves towards the wall after it has all been set up.

It would be nice if as paying customers we could be told what was going on. My guess was that we had a player stood too close to the WBA wall? Shame it looked like an interesting set play routine.

The referees are miked, put the decision on the big telly.

I was wrong 3 or more. Still my last point still stands, the ref normally enforces the 10yards/1m before the kick is taken.

That was definitely one of the worst performances from officials that I have ever seen. You can understand when a ref is being overly picky etc. but some of the decisions last night just didn't make sense. I think a major factor though is that the linesman seem absolutely sh*t scared to make a decision for themselves in this decision. Ive lost count the amount of games there's been an incident right in front of the linesman yet he's clearly waiting for the ref, who is nowhere near the play, to make a decision for him.

As i've stated on here before though, how can you take referees seriously in the Championship, when they use refs from the prem for big games? and worst still, if a ref makes a mistake in the prem, the next week he is officiating in the Championship! Makes no sense at all.

The first ten minutes give me an idea how it will pan out and the foul on Jones was the benchmark. So tell me what do his asses do on the sideline, wait for the Ref to decide then put the flag up accordingly, have some ballax and tell the Ref what you saw.......

Seemed to have it in for us from the start - nearly every challenge was deemed a dive by a Boro player (not something we're known for?)

That said, I thought WBA won the physical battle overall, fortunate for them really as they're an incredibly limited football side - Bruce has his work cut out there.

The most infuriating thing I've noticed recently with linesmen is when the ball goes out for a throw in right in front of them and they wait for the ref to give it before flagging. If they're waiting on the ref why have them at all?

They should have the same powers as Rugby linesmen, who call it and tell the ref what he/she has seen, surely that is their job, as an extra pair of eyes closer to the action than the ref.

For the free-kick - one of the West Brom players ended up on the floor so presumedly given for that rather than someone being too close to the wall. The replay was only shown once on the TV, at full speed and from the opposite stand so you couldn't really see what was going on due to players blocking the view to know whether there was an actual foul.

And Morrison walked.
Yeah, the officials last night were absolutely dreadful. Worst I’ve seen this season. 3 minutes injury time for the first half and 5 minutes for the 2nd half?

CHRONIC TIME WASTING from West Brom going completely unchecked.. then tapping on his watch when we didn’t rush!

Connolly! I’d like to see how Andy Carroll got smacked in the face from his his arm? a free kick for dropping to his knees.

Delayed reactions around the box were comical, the BLATANT HAND BALL!

Shocking! Once a gain robbing the paying public! It’s an absolute joke! THE FANS deserve much better than that, much better.

The Championship is amongst the best leagues in Europe now imo, along with the money involved (how much do fans pay for tickets in Germany) the officials should reflect that level.

Folks are quick to jump onto players not pulling their weight or under performing.. that lot last night should be no where near the championship.

There were so many controversial incidents last night that went WBA way.

The one that gets me the most was his failure to award anything when Jones had beaten his man and was fouled in the first half. He had beaten his man and was through. The referee‘s have to ask themselves the question ‘Why would any player go down when they had an opportunity to be through and get a shot away that may lead to a goal?’ It was an embarrassing decision. Would the player have seen red if he gave it? What the point of lino’s (old school) is these days baffles me. The one by the East stand at times was not even watching what happened at very close quarters.

Same mate see above! Been saying it all season, either incompetent through fear of making a mistake, or it is deliberate with the coercion of the refereeing body.

I do think the EFL should have an independent refereeing panel made up of respected ex referees who aren't in the same structure. Most ex refs and assessors seem to take a defacto stance of defending the referees blindly, regardless of clear evidence.

The referee and linesman's performances should be graded post match, and any of their contentious issues / decisions should have to explained. This report could then be made available online for fans / media to peruse.

These reports should be used to grade referees in a league table. With higher pay for top performing ones, bigger games and promotion to the PL etc.

They currently seem to perform poorly (routinely), with no consequences and as it isn't a Prem top six fixture almost no serious scrutiny from the press / media.

Imagine he's our referee in a play off final.

He could cost us £160 million and three or so members of our first team squad. And he'll trot on and do the same next season.

It is baffling how poor they seem to be the last few seasons. I don't ever recall coming away from the ground so many times simply baffled by the ineptitude of the officials. I've been angry in the past at missed blatant fouls or obvious reds that haven't been given. But often now I'm pretty confused as to what decision is being made and why, and how the linesman and referee haven't given it. Jones penalty away at Blackburn, Jones pull back and tackle last night, Fry being kicked in the face and being stitched up and out for a few weeks. Swansea away debacle, the list just seems to on and on.

Incompetence on a grand scale with no scrutiny or consequences. Who do they think they are, a Johnson Cabinet?

🤷🏼‍♂️
