RE: Coffee Connoisseurs

Us working class guys drink tea...or Bovril at the match
Thanks 👍
I use to always take oxo with me when I had my DofE groups out. The kids use to say 'urrr, are you drinking gravy.' 🤣 🤣 🤣

I'm going in my shed now and when I come back in for the Pop Master, I will have an oxo, peppered, slightly salted and a dash of English mustard to beef it up; And of course, there will be a handful of Jacob's crackers. ;)

Like an OXO with a bit of white pepper 👍

I wish I was a penny behind some of these guys spending a fortune on coffee machines......I've spent less on cars 🤣

I have this, and apart from having to go back to the manufacturer for a couple of repairs it's great. You do get through a fair amount of beans with it though, and so a coffee subscription is a good idea too:-

Great espresso, and a decent steam wand for milk based drinks too.

I had a Nespresso pod machine before this and always found the coffee was never hot enough.
£1k from Harrods.....!!!!!!
I've bought 2 cars for that 👍

I've been in the coffee industry for over 30 years so more than happy to help. If you want to drink espresso and just black coffee then you should get a bean to cup machine, if you want latte etc then you need something more with more bells and whistles. For a budget, Melitta make very good bean to cup machines and I've just seen one at Curry's for only £169.

If you go down this road then avoid coffee from the supermarket shelves and source from small roasters who have a passion for quality instead of churning out terrible blends from cheap green but don't get stuck with buying from just one roaster as they will have their own preferences and you might want to experience more.

I've got a small roaster in my garage and access to the very best green coffees from around the world so very much spoiled and this is as much a hobby now instead of just drinking coffee.

If you're going to make milk based drinks like latte then just buy any old crap coffee blends as you won't get to enjoy the different flavours that each country and region gives. What you're essentially doing is similar to buying a very fine wine and then mixing it with vimto and ice cubes.

Love me coffee, particularly espresso. Found the best way was to grind the beans and use a decent stovetop coffee maker, best ever, cost twenty or thirty quid. Downside, probably makes too much in one batch. Upside, you can try a variety of coffees.

However I’ve reverted to a machine that uses the Dolche Gusto pods - the espresso is decent enough, but you can get a ‘cup thingy’ that you can put your own grinds in to make your own.
I've got a mocha pot that I use now and again and a Nespresso Vertuo which does make a great espresso but the cost of them is soaring. My Gaggia broke after 15 years of great service and have been on Nespresso ever since. I've never grinded my own beans though only ever used paper Esse pods or ready ground coffee.

Depends what you want, but if you drink foamed milk drinks then you need a machine with a decent steam wand included and learn to steam the milk yourself - it's pretty easy with a little bit of practice.

There's loads of reviews on YouTube, but I went for a Sage machine, they seem to have a good balance between value and usability.

Oh, and never buy supermarket beans, always get freshly roasted, otherwise you'll end up with cold horrible bog water!
Purely an espresso man to be honest...I'm not really needing the steam wand. Which Sage did you get? Been looking at the Sage Barista Pro

Sage make some great machines - my son who is a Coffee Connoisseur and has all sorts of gadgets to test he is getting the 'gold cup ' every time has one such, there's a guy called James Hoffmann on YouTube that is considered the 'coffee god' who advises on some machines too.
I'll give him a watch 👌

I have a Nespresso, a grinder, stove top, and a cafetiere. Been looking at a Sage machine but I can't justify it at the moment without getting rid of the rest but the Nespresso is too convenient. I only use it for espresso but it is a latissima so does milky coffee but not as well as a proper steam wand would do I presume.

If you are getting a grinder make sure it is burr and not blade. I'm never fully happy with my cafetiere, been tempted by an aeropress but think I'm just going to wait until I can fit this in the kitchen somewhere https://amzn.eu/d/0K4BsyS
That's why I used to use the paper pods in my Gaggia...just throw them away with no mess and the espresso was superb.

We froth our milk with a metal jug and a plunger with a couple of wire plates in it. Froths it much thicker than a steamer
