RE: Coffee Connoisseurs

Just to add my opinion as another person coffee obsessed. I think the focus has to be on what flavours you enjoy out of coffee and how to best achieve them.

I love coffee in loads of different forms from espresso to milk drinks and from coffee cocktails to painstakingly dripped filter.

So for me I bought a decent grinder and then lots of options to experiment with. I think grinding is the most important step to better coffee. I got through to the final of the British aeropress championships a year back and so that always has a soft spot for me.

If you like the darker roasted coffee/bitter flavours I think you get less benefit from more expensive equipment. It is the fruity, acidic flavours that really get clarity from a good grinder and detailed dialing process.

(PS - the espresso set up I want will set me back over 3 grand... I can't justify it... yet)
What Grinder did you go for Rav?

Aldi does what I think is a highly palatable decaf ground coffee. Doesn't cost a fortune, either.

Need to try that one. Best one I've found so far is Morrisons house blend decaf. Never been a fan of any decaf really but these days find I can't sleep if I have more than two cups of real coffee a day, so trying to find a good alternative as I do like a coffee.

I'm a fan of Sainsbury's own brand decaff.👍

Been looking into getting either a bean to cup machine or a grinder and an espresso machine...anyone on here got one?

Another shout for the Sage Barista Express machine.

Had it it around a year.. love it. Use it daily. Built in grinder, bean to cup in 30 seconds, milk steaming wand.. takes some getting used to but once you nail it it makes beautiful coffee.

The more time you put into it to perfect the coffee and learn how to use it the better.

Buy fresh beans (roasted no less than 30 days ago). I can recommend Rountons, they do some lovely coffee beans.. Would recommend Midnight Harvest.

I've been reading loads of reviews and to suit me I think I'm stuck between a Sage Barista Pro and the Gaggia Classic Pro + Sage smart grinder. They both come out roughly around the same price give or take £50 👍

Update : I've gone for the Sage Barista Pro. Managed to get over £100 off with a voucher code from the coffee blogger fella. I'll let you know how I get on 🫣

It's arrived and it's amazing!! Just need to fine tune it a little but the first shot I had was superb 👌. Coffee puck was a bit wet so over extracting a bit I think...need to dial it in 😂

I've got the Barista Pro and you do need to fine tune the grind, dose, tamp etc to get things going properly.

I couldn't get hot (enough) coffee initially, until I realised the grind need adjusting to slow the flow through the group head.

I've noticed the wand needs cleaning regularly too.

Only got it yesterday afternoon so I've only had one shot so far...but first one was equal to a coffee shop espresso 👌
