Some transfers which were mega expensive at the time seem almost reasonable now when you try and compare abilities with values.

Van Nistelrooy would be approx £120m, for example.
 
Goes to show how overseas investment and the Premier League have changed the landscape of football in England. Boro probably won't be able to pay more than £5m for a player for the foreseeable future. That's probably about £500k in old money.

Of course they could.
 
It’s weird though that if we signed a player for £5m today I’d think “wow, fairly big signing”. But we actually spent that sum (near enough) twice in 1995, 28 years ago. It’s an odd one, it’s as if inflation hasn’t happened to some transfer values. Does this make any sense at all to anyone?

We paid 6.75 for Payero, 5m for Latte-Lath and 4.3m for Akpom. All in Euro, but they're all not far off £5m quid.
 
Was just half watching this on Sky News. Did they say Rio Ferdinand would be 199 million?
 
I think that's inflation at the top end of the market only though, isn't it?

Fees paid for average championship players have increased massively, but not by the massivle multiples of the PL. What is the current record for a championship fee? IS it still Britt? If so, it's about 3x what we paid for Merson in '97. By contrast the £15m paid for Shearer in a year or two earlier has increased far more.

Meanwhile, as a kid i remember 4th tier clubs exchanging players for 10, 20, 50k. I don't think there's any market except free transfers, and the occasion "investor" at that level now, is there?
