Rav on his move to Boro

I'll give the whole thing a listen. The article appears to suggest he is being honest about coming for the money at least. He was on £7k a week at Juve and asked for £42k, which we met. Not sure he'd have been captain ahead of Ferrara, Conte and Deschamps though, not to mention Zidane or Del Piero. :) They used to rotate their strikers and he didn't always start, hence why they were happy to sell him (and bring in Boksic/Vieri).

Yes, I believe it was, I know tlf scored because on the way back to the car the Everton fans were chuntering on that they’d been done by a Brazilian dwarf!
Barmby backheeled one into his path from quite a way out and Southall was all at sea. We came from behind to win. I think Barmby lobbed Southall as well. He was way past his best.

🎵 when the white feather scores
and the Riverside roars
Rav-an-ellllli 🎵

I remember going to an away match at Goodison Park, and all you could hear in the away pub was that being sung by hundreds of Boro fans! Magical times.
I remember 'now you're going to believe us we're going to win the league' being sung a lot here. It was also the first time I remember the ole Juninho song being widespread. As opposed to the just juninho, juninho being repeated.

I also remember that. The Juninho, Juninho bow stopped and we developed a proper song finally.

26 and a half years ago

Pretty sure when Everton fans were singing “Everton” and we were singing “Emerson”, Emerson thought the entire ground were singing his name. Great away day.
Emerson had a big enough ego to believe it!

This was definitely during his 'best player in the world' 6 week spell too that led to him trying to force a move to Barca.

No wonder we loved TLF. We had some absolute pricks playing for us that season.

My understanding was in Italy pre-Euro contracts were in dollars, a hangover from when the Italian Lira was considered too unstable for long term financial arrangements. He asked for $42k which was equivalent to £26k.

At the time, the £26k was reported in The Sun etc but subsequently that has become £42k.

I liked Emerson.. thought he played with a broken foot?

I remember £42k being quoted at the time we signed him. This is an article from the end of that season that quotes the £42k. Of course, it’s unlikely many people know the exact figure.

Given the fact Boksic was on £63k just a year or two later, £42k wouldn't be too much of a shock. Think Merson was on around £40k and was quoted before saying he doubled his Arsenal wage and therefore dropped down a league.

Contemporaneous with the signing, before the season unwound & people were trying to use his salary as a stick to beat us with, reported by an unbiased source as £1.3m = £25k a week.

Boksic was 4 years later. I'm not sure about him being paid £63k either.

7 years after Boksic we were going to make Mark Viduka our highest paid player ever (according to Keith Lamb afterwards) before he joined Newcastle, when they bombed him out two years later it was reported he was on £60k. Why would you join Newcastle for less money than Boro were offering (assuming Boksic was on £63k & Keith Lamb was telling the truth)?

Gross/net was always a big factor in the reporting of salaries in those days.

Obviously we don’t know what Rav was on but if we’re honest it must have been a boat load to come here. Sure, we had Robbo and were an exciting new proposition, but he came for the big bucks.

£7k to £25k is a big increase.
