Rav on his move to Boro

heady days .... even when it was all ticking along you had a feeling it was going to end in tears with all the big egos at a little club in Yorkshire .... Emersons 6 week period was imence then his head was turned and he wanted to be away and the heart of a lion became drained and sterile .... Rav was always a cut above the rest of the team in egos tho.... talks a good show but really he was all show ...didnt make for great teamwork .... great days but prefer the current crop of players who are hungry and honest

TLF was on £13k/week.

The media used to love to big up Rav's wages - my guess is £25k/week. He went to Marseille and we got £5.3m back, so my guess he went on a similar salary.

Merson was £15k/week - Arsenal were not big payers in 1997 so it could have nearly doubled his wage. They were not a top 6 team like now.

The £15k was enormous for a Championship player - a bit like £100k/week now.

£42k wouldnt surprise me frankly. The following season we enticed Merson up with double what he was getting at Arsenal. Heady and cash splash days alright.

Merson was £12k a week plus bonuses, of which he got many, the season he had. He actually trebled his Arsenal wage.

Arsenal had a bad season but they were champions in 89 and 91. And made two European finals (winning one), plus a few domestic cups in early 90s. Not top 6 is definitely pushing it, especially as they were one of the big 5 PL creators.

True, but they were notoriously low payers in the George Graham era. Merson mentions it in, as does Lee dixon in his book. A story about Wenger apologising to him and Winterburn for the low wages they are on when he renews theirs.

We like to put the blame at players doors but from interviews etc it's been pointed out that our facilities and professionalism (diet, methods, culture) were total amateur level which must have been jarring for some of these players to come into

Vialli had all the same experiences going to Chelsea the same summer, and went about the situation with a lot more decorum than Rav. Chelsea were a mid-table side at the time too.

I wish we’d got Vialli. Things could have been so different.
