Used by British Forces since England won the World Cup.
Sometimes called the "flying bog-roll".

Not all senior Military are happy about its retirement.
Questioning the suitability of the Airbus replacement for "special" opps:

They flew over Beverley this afternoon, pictures taken from our loft velux window.
The top of the Minster is in one shot.
But check out the pigeon hitching a lift!
It’s not trick photography, it just came out that way.

Are they defo all going? I thought a few were still being kept for the spec ops boys?
Not cccording to Forces.net. Like you say, it might be prudent and sensible to keep some for logistical and tactical purposes. Its the Harrier syndrome - we`ve already got a queue of foreign countries lining up to buy our redundant planes. [!](n)

Spent many happy hours either loading or flying in these.

Roar of the 4, will be sadly missed but A400M and C17 can do all and a wee bit more now.

Getting in one from Cyprus to Bastion certainly made you contemplate what the hell you were doing in life!
Just needed to find a nice comfy pallet or sling your hammock in the ramp area.

Mind, loading them helped to make sure you made a nice comfy bed.

Flying in and out of Karachi was interesting, as was Kabul and Basra.

Absolutely crazy decision.. the 400 and c17 are too big for the spec ops missions. I’m guessing we will be begging the Americans for lifts for the future

I had the pleasure on flying on one all the way to Hong Kong and back with lots of stops along the way :D

I once flew back in one from Cyprus, curled up in the boot of a Mazda 6 :D

I thought it was the in-flight refreshments :)
I just had a flashback that adds some Boro reference to the story. We were flying back on the Friday on a Tristar and the port engine threw some blades on the climb out and we had to turn back. We managed to cadge a lift back in the C130 on the Monday. That meant I missed the famous end of season Boro V Newcastle avoid relegation/win promotion game where we stuffed them 4:1. I had to listen to snapshots of the game on BBC World Service :(

2 slabs - one for us and 1 for the booking centre who did all the DAC paperwork.

During OP DRIVER we had to stop taking cars back by ac. Loads of C130s flying out full and back empty.

We couldn't fit any more beer in the room we had allocated (duty movers bunk) and Lyneham had run out of car parking space. Customs couldn't clear the cars quick enough.

Could get x 3 cars in a MK3 and x 2 in a Mk1.

Spent many hours aboard Fat Albert. I vividly remember the back ramp dropping when we got off at Dharan for the kick off of the Gulf war and the heat hitting me. We were instructed to don helmets, full webbing and **** our SLR rifles, and sprint to the nearest building . It was about 5:00am and we’d been flying for about 16 hours, via Cyprus for duty supper .
I was lucky enough to capture them coming over Leeming on their final goodbye.
