Racist Incident

Sadly the rise of "leaders" like Trump and Johnson (and all the rhetoric about Brexit) have enabled scum like this to feel that this is acceptable behavior. Your partner did exactly the right thing but sadly the Neanderthals will see it as a victory.
This sort of behaviour could never have happened in the 1960's, 1970's, 1980's, 1990', 2000's, or 2010's. Trump and Johnson have a lot to answer for.

It's everywhere Newy. If you look at the way Ukraine refugees are portrayed in the media compared to those from Afghanistan or Syria, the difference is stark. The unsaid message boils down to skin colour. The fact that the print media is allowed to get away with setting the national agenda in this way should be a criminal matter. It has infected the fabric of our society like a cancer.

Just thought I'd share this - Something that happened to my partner on Sunday.

She was travelling from Newcastle to Donny on the Edinburgh to Kings X train.

She sat at a table seat opposite a family of 4 (older mother, father and 2, 20 something offspring)

After a while, they started saying (amongst themselves) stuff like... "Have you seen the blackness outside" "Have you seen the taint - it will spread", is this the Black zone" and other blatant innuendos as well as comments about "F****** migrants. Also, the father opened a magazine, which had a picture of a black guy and deliberately turned it towards my partner - leaving the page open.

There were other people in the carriage who looked a bit concerned but didn't say anything.

After a while my partner moved to a different carriage fearing that it could turn into something more sinister.

She sat next to a young guy who noticed that she was flustered and he asked if she was ok - she told him the story and he told her that he actually worked for LNER - after alerting one of the on duty staff and a mini conference - they offered to get the transport police to pick them up at York - she declined and they got off at York anyway. They said that she can report a racist incident within one week - With very little chance of any sort of a conviction, she's decided not to pursue it, fearing that it could open a can of worms.

Just thought I'd share this because a lot of people don't know what Racism looks like - it's not a skinhead screaming obscenities in your face but more often subtle and psychological.

My partner said that the LNER staff were super helpful, offered to escort her home etc....fortunately, I was picking her up at Donny station. I'm sure that if I'd have been with her it would'nt have happened.
racists are quite often cowardly fookers, starting on a woman on her own. Hope she's ok W_V, absolutely shocking.

to be honest she's a bit shook up (a-ha ha) - but more angry. It's not the first time this sort of thing has happened and most white people never see any of this - it goes under the radar.
Although it's not direct abuse, it's still disturbing and worrying. It sometimes starts as indirect comments and quickly transforms into something more sinister.

You know what I mean 🙄 There is a level of empowerment among what used to be the "silently ignorant" over the past few years.

Seriously?
In the 60s, 70s and 80s they wouldn't have even felt the need to be 'subtle' about it.

yup, they're looking for a reaction so they can ramp it up and round on her. I've seen it before and it's appalling. Some people really are awful, what ever happened to those old values of "if you've got nothing good to say, say nothing at all" and "treat people like you want to be treated". These people clearly have forgotten those old truisms.

Disgusting behaviour. I'd like to think I'd challenge someone doing that to someone. Absolute Neanderthals and scum.

I'm sorry this happened to your partner. Or anyone else!

And some people seem confused why most of us are ***ed off when some of our "supporters" boo taking the knee.

If people are sick of hearing about racism tough ****. It's very much alive and kicking in the UK. I think a lot of people assume if it's not present in their own social circles or "bubbles" it doesn't exist.

I think his response was a sarcastic jibe at my comment and he, in fact (and quite rightly) is saying this is not new behavior (but that wasn't the point I was making).
Ah, if that were the case then apologies dsr. I thought you might have been a youngster who was spared the actions of the National Front and its mindless ilk.

Sorry to hear about your partners experience WV. Unfortunately institional, direct and indirect racial discrimination is still rife in the UK. Some people will not acknowledge it or minimise it by saying it was worse before and have little desire to show any understanding or support to others who face these situations day in day out. As others have said certain leaders have emboldened the racists to spread their hatred.

There are a number of people on this board who clearly hold racist views, others are not so blatant but it seeps out every so often and there are others who hide behind a neutrality and belive that's OK too. Then there are a few who actively take an ant-racist stance and challenge others to think again, who I admire for their stance, hopefully the numbers will grow and in time experiences like this will become less frequent, lets hope so, best wishes to you and your partner.

It’s sad she didn’t want the hassle of reporting it even when offered the chance.

If someone on the carriage had just said “behave eh” to the family, she possibly would have felt she had more support and more confidence in anyone backing her up.

It doesn’t have to be vigilante action or anything, just someone simply acknowledging something untoward is happening.

Like someone else said, just saying hello and chatting to the victim asking if they’re alright etc is often enough to put off the Neanderthals, because they’ll realise their sly actions have been clocked by others on board.
