“20:26
MAN UTD 2-1 SOUTHAMPTON

25: DRINKS! What a way to end the first quarter as Martial nets his 50th Premier League goal.

Saints have lost more matches (26) and conceded more goals (84) versus United than they have against any other Premier League side.”

It’s coming, complete with a message from our sponsors 🙄

I don't mid quarters, it's a good way for an "out of it" team to potentially get back into the game with a proper tactical change that the opposition can't overhear.

How many times in amateur sport do you see teams changing players, style, tactics and formation when it's not half time? Loads of teams wait until half time of the last 5 minutes when they're desperate. The first is a waste of time, and potentially things could get worse before half time. The latter is often half arsed and too late.

Pro's do plan for changes a lot better, but a 5 minute chat works much better than a few lines on a bit of paper.

I seem to recall this idea being proposed prior to the USA '94 WC to allow more opportunity for advertising. It was widely derided then and should be now.

That cuts both ways; for every team that it benefits, there is someone else losing out. I also think coaching systems, such as those in Holland, encourage players to solve tactical problems for themselves. Such an approach also suffers from having more influence from those on the touchline. The abilities to think and adapt are important in football, and we should not expect those qualities in the coach alone.

Good point about continental players sorting out problems on the pitch. Also I think it would take some of the romance and drama from the game. Will there be as many giant killing acts when a world class coach with a bench full of superstars gets two extra periods to make tactical and personnel changes?

I am in a minority but whilst I don't care for them Id give each side one "time out" to call per match rather than stop the game on 22 and 67 mins.

Why not have specialists on the bench that you can swap in and out during play so an expert deadball player, or a keeper who is a great penalty stopper or...

FFFFFFS no.

Just no, its another shidt idea to fix something that isn't broken. You're getting a whupping, the manager/coach makes a change from the sidelines and the onfield captain carries it out. Drinks in the pouring rain...

Have a word with yourself Wev
