Qatar hearts and minds campaign going well then.

An ambassador for the World Cup in Qatar has described homosexuality as a “damage in the mind” in an interview just two weeks before the opening of the global soccer tournament in the conservative Gulf state, highlighting concerns about its treatment of LGBTQ people.

Former Qatari national player Khalid Salman told German public broadcaster ZDF in an interview that being gay is “haram” — “forbidden,” in Arabic — and that he has a problem with children seeing gay people.

Excerpts of the television interview were shown Monday night on ZDF’s news program Heute Journal. The full interview, which is part of a documentary, will be shown Tuesday night on ZDF.

Have to say, I’m not sure a well-intentioned “campaign” is enough to change the collective views of a largely very traditional Muslim state.

Former Fifa president Sepp Blatter says the decision to award the 2022 World Cup to Qatar was a "mistake".

Blatter, 86, was president of world football's governing body when Qatar was awarded the tournament in 2010.
The Gulf state has been criticised for its stance on same-sex relationships, human rights record and treatment of migrant workers.

"It is too small of a country. Football and the World Cup are too big for it," he told Swiss newspaper Tages Anzeiger.

The Qatar World Cup, the first to be hosted in the Middle East in the tournament's 92-year-history and the first during the Northern Hemisphere winter, takes place from 20 November to 18 December.

Blatter said Fifa had adjusted the criteria used to select host countries in 2012 after concerns were raised about the treatment of migrant workers building World Cup stadiums in Qatar.

"Since then, social considerations and human rights are taken into account," he added.

We got our money, people raised their eyebrows and got angry and now we’ve changed the rules

Cnut

So the problem is the size of the country?? Has it shrunk or something since they awarded it. Surely this should have been considered at the time. The area that is covered by the distance between the stadiums isn't much bigger than the area from Leeds to Harrogate! Absolutely ridiculous

How that man hasn't done time in jail is remarkable.

One of the most corrupt individuals in football and everyone knows it.
Amazingly he was actually cleared the other month.

Btw in a total unrelated story michel
Platini son worked As a lawyer for blatter.

Jedi you are starting thread after thread critisising Qatar yet its that bad you holidayed there earlier this year ?

Of course it isn't the size of the country that has given him this epiphany of sorts. He is suddenly smacked with guilt.

As somebody put it very politely above he is a corrupt cnut.

This tournament is basically the swansong for the “host nation” style World Cup too. From 2026 onwards it will be 48 teams spread across 3-4 countries at a time, or entire continents. The 2030 tournament looks like it’ll be hosted by half of South America (including Uruguay for the centenary).

What a way to go out! Being hosted by a country with literally zero footballing heritage and a whole host of ridiculous/barbaric laws.
