Puppy Training

I am looking at introducing a new baby into the house, Previously I have adopted house trained woofies from the RSPCA. Can anyone offer some top tips for introducing a 3 month old Collie to the equation regarding toilet training, lead control, and avoiding letting them sleep in your bed 🤷‍♂️

bumface is a collie man...no that doesn't read right does it because he's not (does this belong on another thread?)

bumface is the proud owner (or perhaps just best mates) with a border collie known as TMB so he may be able to give you some tips

@bumface, can you assist my inclination to adopt, with real advice?

Any advice, good or bad, would be appreciated and would not put me off adoption of this lovely woofer whom i potentially intend to call Nobby [ I kid you not]. My reasoning is because the RSPCA showed me their notebook on him and well the link is obvious.

If they start circling and sniffing take them straight out as they are about to 'go'
When they do their business outside praise them and keep saying 'wee' and 'pooh' as they do it. It's always worked for my dogs and I say 'go for a wee/pooh' and they know what is expected and head to the door - so it seems to work

My advice would be to name the puppy bumface. That's a way better name than Nobby. Don't worry coluka. Collies are really bright dogs when they're not being really stupid. The puppy will have you toilet trained in no time.

Crate train. Not a nice thought caging an animal but the best thing I done with my puppy. It gives them their own space and dogs generally wont poo where they sleep. Get up once or twice during the night and put them in the garden, ignore them until they do their business then praise them and back in the crate. Maybe takes a week or so but they learn fast. I stopped closing the cage door pretty soon after getting mine because he picked it up really well.

As long as you know and accept it's a development puppy and not a senior pro dog that you are only used to, you should be fine . Don't let the chairperson of the house who's allowing you this chance, hear you talk in a perhaps disparaging way about 'just the development puppy'

Collies are working breed and not great family pets. They need to be "worked" both physically and mentally ever day otherwise you're in trouble. We had one as a kid and the intelligence level was off the chain but we didnt work him and we paid the price behaviour wise.

Establish ground rules from day one.... But him in the garden straight after each meal and keep him out until he does what he needs to.

Lots of praise

Early age needs short but regular walks.... 5mins for every month old he is.

They are hearding dogs so dont be surprised if he shows behaviour towards animals and Kids (watch for heal nips and address the action straightaway so he knows its not acceptable)

watch for resource guarding and address the action asap

once onld enough get him into something like fly ball so keep him stimulated.
