Puppy Help

Which vet do you go to? Anybody got any recommendations for good vets? Alot of people say PDSA but that's more a charity isn't it?
We're with Abbey Vets in Durham. not sure where you are but they only have a branch in Durham and Chester Le Street. They've been pretty good. Obviously not ideal if you're in Boro!

Where do you live?

My son's vet is in Stockton on Durham Rd and they are very good.

Edit: Not that I take my son to the vet, we do allow him to see a doctor. ;)🤣🤣🤣🤣

I'd personally only ever buy a dog from a registered breeder that adheres to guidelines and proper health checks, and avoid sites like those like the plague.

I think you have to be registered as a breeder now don't you for dogs?
I can only reiterate what TFG said puppy buyers do your research, my mrs bought a lab pup when i was working away, last pup, runt of the litter we have had to do a lot of work with him for anxiety issues, in contrast when we bought our retriever, via pets4home, i asked a lot of questions to sound out the owner even prior to meeting the pup, we spent about an hour with two pups and the mother and the owners chatting, you could see the mother was a fantastic dog with a perfect temperament and manner well looked after by the owners, picked the stronger dog, and shes been an absolute dream. going back to the opening poster, another alarm bell for me would be the fact you mention he met you in his car with the pup. Get the dog checked out asap, with love and care i am sure it ill be a great dog. Expect it to sleep for the most of the day at that age and in this warm weather.

If you haven’t, take the dog to the vets now!!! Not eating isn’t great, but dehydration is a killer. Sorry to be melodramatic, but that’s a fact.
Yeah, dogs can go a long time without eating, same as humans, but not drinking is far worse, same as in humans.

Keep in mind that it's extremely hot too for dogs, I'd probably avoid having him outside until he starts drinking.

If you are in Stockton then Jacqui Patersons in Hartburn are spot on.
I've used JP in Preston Farm, Hartburn and Nunthorpe, always spot on.

The Preston Farm one also has an out of hours practice too (ran by another company), Vets Now I think it's called, so at least if you do need to go out of hours, it's somewhere familiar.

Yeah he got out of the car and said I'll give him his injection now.
He gave me a little chip which I'm presuming is his microchip and it was attached to little bar code stickers?
As I speak he's currently eating a little biscuit, seems to still be a little nervous, but I think I'm definately going to register with a vet after I've had a cuppa (been on school run haha)
All sounds very dodgy? What exactly was the place you got the puppy from? Absolutely nobody other than a vet should be giving an injection

Puppy Update.

Sorting out pet insurance but it's all so confusing, hard to find the right one.
He's began coming out of his she'll, he's found the food and water bowl, still not eating great but he's began drinking , he plays himself in the garden with my daughter to the point of tiredness then goes to sleep on the sofa to do it all again.
Currently watching dogs barking on the TV with my daughter 😂

We have lifetime cover for our pup (a 9 month old Cocker Spaniel) so it means it will cover any ongoing issues for life rather than just the term of the policy (1 year). We took £7500 annual cover which will hopefully cover most eventualities. Ironically we had to use it almost immediately after she had a reaction to her second injection and had to rush her to the out of hours vets.. all good tho fortunately.

As already said get your little one to the vets for a good check over, we didn't get ours until 12 weeks rather than 8 so had a reasonable appetite by then so can't comment on what it was like at 8 weeks. They obviously only have small portions anyway at that age.

I would also suggest ice cubes as a sneaky way of getting some fluids in .. Willow loves chasing them around the kitchen floor as they slide about and we have made it into a game for her now which she goes nuts for!

Am I right in thinking the excess that is stated is the amount you pay towards any procedures?
I've seen a great one, with lifetime cover, yearly of 10k, only thing not involved is legal consultation/advice with excess of £100.
He seems a happy little pup now he's settling in

I've recently arranged pet insurance for my pup with a company called Napo. They seem really good so far and included in the policy is the unlimited video consultations with a vet, which we've used once already and it was excellent. Considered the pet plans for our dog but in the end just registered him with a local Vets and buy the flea treatment/worming tablets ourselves. They're cheap enough.

Happy to hear he's settling in.

I remember when we got ours (from the same website actually) and it was the first time I had owned a dog, I was watching her every single second to make sure she was okay, couldn't take my eyes off her and kept asking questions to my now wife as I wasn't sure what to expect.

Yes that's what the excess is. We used M&S lifetime cover, I can't specifically remember why we chose it, just the best balance of cover/cost/excess i assume

Yes that's your excess for each claim. Ours is through John Lewis (sourced via Compare the market I think).. not the cheapest but appeared to be best value for the level of cover and benefits offered

I agree in principal, but very few places will allow families with younger children to adopt.
I'm all for propoer research and careful consideration before getting a dog though.
You are correct to a certain extent, re-homing charities will make sure families with kids are matched with dogs with the right temperaments, and not just base don breed or the fact someone wants only certain kinds of dogs.

Someone like Dogs Trust for example, I dont think they even show puppies for rehoming on their website. You need to register your interest in a puppy, pass all the re-homing tests, then you will be contacted when a puppy comes available. If its a lurcher pup, then thats what it is. I think you could be in for a long wait if you want a specific breed.

So many horrendous puppy breeders out there who are only interested in cash and have no interest in the health and well being of the puppies.
