Promotion last season....the foundations

Somebody touched on it in the Sheff Utd thread in terms on the (almost) certainty of keeping all our loan players, and akpom, if we got promoted.

I know any time is a good time to get promoted, and ultimitely we did great considering where we were - but everything really was in place last season for us to go up wasn't it? 😔

Yeah it was a massive opportunity missed. We may get promoted at some future point but with all due respect to Coventry and Luton it's unlikely to ever get any easier than that.

No. They are in the main of Championship quality, top end of course, which is where they'll be next season. If we'd gone up the 12 new signings would have been of a higher standard for us to have any chance to stay there.

This. People sneering about Sheff Utd and Luton but then saying we'd do better by signing the likes of Archer and Giles is bit bizarre.

Also no guarantee Akpom would have been any good at all at PL level.

I was wrong at end of last year. I was not too put out about missing out as I thought naively that this season would be the same great football but it has not worked out that way.

It would have cost us plenty just to keep a squad of the same quality. Which wouldn't even begin to address the fact that having a defence that wasn't good enough for the Championship would be a disaster waiting to happen had we been promoted. We may have had the best attack in the Championship to paper over our defensive frailties, but they wouldn't have been able to do that up against the big boys.

Disappointing? Yes.

Blowing our chance to join the elite for more than a season? Nah, not really unless we found an awful lot of money down the back of the sofa.

FFS this old chestnut.. in a word.. no

Giles isn't starting for Luton, Akpom isn't playing for Ajax, Ramsey has been injured, Mowett couldn't cut it, Muniz.. probably the same, Payero didn't fancy it.. AND
we would have had to lump over a HUGE amount of cash.

Two prem loans.. we would have probably went for Ardon Jashari

Giles and Archer will blitz the Championship when they come back down which is ultimately the point. The answer is yes. Last year was a huge missed opportunity. There is no denying that. Suck it up.

It was a missed opportunity but the foundations for Premier League football weren't in place.

Giles will be as weak at defending when he comes back down as he was with us.

Picking a left back based solely on his ability in attack is like picking a keeper based solely on his distribution......oh hang on

Based on the 'Cameron Archer' thread on here he won't be coming back down with Sheffield United but will be going back to Villa under the buyback agreement in his contract.

I always said I thought Giles would be a bad signing if we went up due to the fact we are likely to be under the cosh in most games and defending wasn't his strong point. I loved Giles and would have back in a heartbeat in the Championship but I'm not surprised with how it's going for him at Luton.

Archer and Ramsey would have been good signings.

If we had gone up we would have needed pretty much a whole new defence as none of them are Premier League quality. Would have needed a stronger CM to replace Howson. Assuming we had signed Archer and Ramsey and also kept Akpom, we would have needed at least one other striker. We would still have needed Dieng.

To compete I think we would have had to spend circa 80mil and I doubt Gibbo would have been willing to commit that.

We would need a LOT stronger that we had last season

Coventry were a good side with probably one of the most difficult strikers in the league to handle. About standard really for a play off team. It's pot luck, we could face better sides in the future in the play offs, but we could face worse.

Let's face it, if we went up then we would be sat firmly in the relegation zone and having an awful season, losing nearly every game and be made to look like a bunch of amatures, and would be unable to keep a clean sheet if we tried. Our new signings would be of questionable ability and integrating them into the side would be really difficult - so bad in fact we would probably resort to playing our youth team graduates. Before long people would be wanting the manager to be sacked and questioning Gibsons involvement with the club.

Thank goodness we stayed down, where none of the above happened.

I thought this too tbh, though having thought about it, I think Giles would have been a half decent signing for a side promoted; but not as a regular starter. He'd have been best employed in the cup games and to bring on for the last 20 minutes if you're chasing a game by a single goal and want an extra bit of impetus to snatch a draw from the jaws of defeat.
