Private Eye and Teesside freeport

Can we stop talking about Brexit on this thread. There are plenty of other opportunities on other threads.
The issues in the article should be of concern to everyone, however you voted on Brexit.

The Private Eye piece alludes to sharp business practices. The article points out how the land, the associated grants and contracts have been bought, sold and carved up between a small group of people. It also highlights the lack of any meaningful oversight. Well worth a read.
No, we can't stop talking about brexit. Given its the mechanism that started all this

You are making that up. Don't worry, it's a common lie about me. Well done you for turning this debate into another attack. You trolls work hard
Sorry, I stand corrected, but I was sure you mentioned questioning your local candidates on your tax. I will have to have a look in the archives.

You probably will too. It's stunning how sad some people are in their quest to ignore the subject and just attack me.

You really need a better hobby.

It is not an attack on you though, it is a comment to something you said about Conservatives avoiding tax.

It is, its a random attack thay has no connection to the subject. I think you've done this before. I have to wonder what is wrong with you to be this obsessed and derail yet another thread.

To keep this thread on track, I will personal message you a response you made in May 2020.

Yeah he's a massive Tory is Anton.

Only ever been a member of one party: the SDP (although my membership may have expired recently ). The word 'massive' could not be used in conjunction with the SDP. At least not in my remaining time. This is for your information only. It is not a recommend.

I don't think anyone is suggesting that political or economic corruption ever went away.
I think the corruption is there for all to see on how the Tees Freeport has been carved up by a few individuals but are we willing as an area to turn a blind eye on this to allow Teesside to prosper?

Prosper?

Give us a break.
Like you, I won't believe it until it happens but if they do, and it's a big if, they manage to bring in the thousands of jobs they have mentioned, then the area will move out of the slump it is in. I think that meets the meaning of the word 'prosper.'

With the shower of sh!te in charge, I won't hold my breath.

Prosper

succeed in material terms; be financially successful.
"his business prospered"
  • flourish physically; grow strong and healthy.
"areas where grey squirrels cannot prosper"

    Definition of prosper

intransitive verb. 1 : to succeed in an enterprise or activity especially : to achieve economic success. 2 : to become strong and flourishing. transitive verb. : to cause to succeed or thrive.

I said can we stop talking about Brexit ON THIS THREAD.

We can argue about Brexit, we can argue about the merits of Freeports, we can argue about whether Freeports could have happened without Brexit.
All issues which many people link together and upon which people will take different view and on which we've had many many threads.

BUT BUT BUT - on this thread we should be calling out Houchen and the other people mentioned in Private Eye for the actions which have "................has led to the enrichment of a few at the expense of democratic controls."

Isn't Houchen a brexiter? No we can't have a discussion on something happening without discussing why it happened? Is that the answer to the catastrophe that is brexit? To pretend it isn't happening? I'm sure that'll help ease the conscience of those thay voted for this catastrophe but I'm of no mind to do that. Not while the country is suffering

just wow. . That paints a picture of public corruption and greed on a very large scale.

One of the key comments sums it up for me. The Governments levelling up policy is a political statement not an investment intention. Words not money. The few have it all and the public are well and truly shafted.

The gazette site is appalling but is there any comment on it about this article, never-mind the obvious dodgyness of the whole project.

As said before something has to done to regenerate Teesside, other areas of the EU/EEC that contained heavy industry have been significantly regenerated while land around the Riverside Stadium is still fairly desolate 27 years after the Stadium was opened. Middlesbrough Dock has been shut for 42 years. South Bank has been almost wiped off the map, like some gold mining town in the Wild West.

When I ask on here there are very few realistic suggestions for redevelopment. Both Conservative and Labour showed limited interest. The Teesside Development Coropration appeared to help, but that was closed down.

You're a brexiter right? Are you aware the Tees alley received nearly £200 million from the EU redevelopment fund? Interesting to bemoan a lack of investment that you voted for

Fill the once thriving acres with solar panels, wind farms etc. The wastelands of what were ICI are never going to be used for agriculture or housing but rather than stay empty they could be used to create green energy under the banner of a Tees Valley Energy Company with the local authorities sharing 51% of the shares, not for resale.

The TDC was run by a bunch of lying scoundrels whose main achievement was the run down of two town centres.
