Postie career

Good luck getting in, I’ve applied and passed their tests for the last few years, no bueno. Think you need to know somebody.

Any other winding down career options for over 50s people can think off a postie is a bit too physical for me. I wouldn't mind some sort of driving/delivery job but I've heard these can be pressured in terms of number of items to be delivered per day and pay isn't great

I started gardening / odd job man i.e cutting grass, weeding, painting fences/ sheds, cleaning gutters etc, then branched into power washing patios / drives etc. Love it, but having to turn down work at moment as don't want it to become a full time thing. If I had started 20 years ago, I would have made it a business venture, but I don't need the stress or income nowadays, hence why I retired early. Very rewarding though. There seems to be a gap in the market in my area for walking dogs...but i think insurance might be an issue with that type of thing.
Good luck

Avoid DPD. I went out for a day with a driver just after I'd been made redundant and it was absolute carnage. Unrealistic targets, flying about everywhere to stay on target with this traffic light system they have. The guy I was with didn't even have time to let me go to a toilet to pee, ended up taking a wazz behind a bloody shop!! Needless to say I didn't go back for a second day. I did also have a driving job for a bakery company which was a nice little number. Early starts obviously but after loading your van for an hour or so you're out on your own. I only left that when I was given an opportunity to get back into my qualified line of work. Definitely worth looking out for driving jobs, but avoid DPD, Amazon, Evri etc.

Working a weekend isn't for me now like but anyone going to be a postie, i can't recommend it enough.

I used to get in about 0430 to do my sort, help others out, sort the flats and any extras, pack my bags up and give them to the drivers to drop at designated spots along my route, then convincing drivers that some of the parcels were too big to carry and ask nicely if they'd drop them so i didn't have to bother, then i'd get my starter bag load it on my bike and cycle about 2mile to my first drop, then do the drop, swapping empty bag for full bags at certain spots, lock my bike up at certain spots and do alot on foot, then cycle back to the SO about 1400 and then help out round there for an hour or so, i did enjoy it. The crack was good, reading peoples postcards was a highlight, anything dodgy or from a rude site got highlighted and always got a laugh, everyone knew where the footballers and anyone of merit lived, everyone knew where the mentalists and savage dogs lived, it was a really good job i did enjoy it but now i look forward to the footy on a Saturday and kids footy on a Sunday

Know a lad who is a postie. Was asking him about his job for a mate. Said its no good if you go to Boro games as you only get 1 Saturday in 6 off. Plus he said his knees are knackered with years of walking the streets. He is about to see if he can change to driving for them.

It's not much like that anymore unfortunately. I've been doing the job for 18 years and compared to what you have wrote there its chalk and cheese. The people are the same, I have some wonderful colleagues, but the job has changed a lot for the worse and there are plans from up high to change it even more.

All the ‘good jobs’ from years ago have disappeared I’m afraid, working for the council or electric and gas boards where decent when you were given jobs to do at 8.00 and as long as they were completed you had the rest of the day to do as you please.Technology become the enemy of the ‘out of the van’ worker I’m afraid.
