Post Office Case

I don’t remember the case was anyone involved or know of it. It seems odd as on the face of it surely a quick check against previous years takings would be one indicator of whether money has gone missing. How could it get as far as court and prison sentences if it was simply a computer error?

The whole farcical situation has been rumbling on for years and at least now the victims are coming ever so closer to a resolution.

Private Eye has been excellent at continuously reporting on it for years. It’s just a shame that the cases didn’t seem to get more publicity in the past.

You have to really feel for the victims here. Lives destroyed due to a broken IT system that was claimed to be infallible. The whole affair is a complete disgrace!

I have a couple of friends who took on the running of their local rural post office at just the wrong time - as this new system was being launched. They were interrogated several times, clearly disbelieved, openly accused of theft, threatened with criminal prosecution and eventually dismissed. It pretty much ruined them. Terrible to see at the time because they weren't really business people, they were innocent and defenceless. They went through hell.

The victims should be compensated, without any further delay.

I suspect the post office are blaming IT provider, but that's an issue that shouldn't affect the Post Offices need to act in the right way.

Does anyone know what position government has taken?

When I was reading I think it was Boris Johnson who ordered a new inquiry about a year ago.

Currently been replayed on radio 4 at 9.45am each day or you can catch up on iplayer. 15 min per episode - well worth a listen.

Oh they have, they issued a fauxpology. That's all right then, makes everything better. Lives devastated and hard working people traumatised, their lives blighted and reputations destroyed, some will have likely passed without seeing their names cleared.

At the very least the PO should pay to publish a full page containing an admission of liability and a personal named apology to each and every one cleared in all UK newspapers.

Disgraceful.

The only apology that would carry any degree of credibility, is one which comes with proper and fair compensation.
