Poppies

Has anyone struggled to buy one this year?

I admit I haven't been out much lately but haven't seen any poppy sellers around.

Have just been asked by a work colleague, whose farther is in the RAF, why I wasn't wearing one. It seemed a bit weak to say I couldn't find one.

Not where I live, plenty of the pubs and shops have them near the tills up here, but I have heard people from elsewhere in the country say they've struggled to find any on sale.

I quite like those fancy enamel ones you can get but at the sometimes they seem a bit "LOOK, I'M WEARING A POPPY"

Which isn't the point really so I always try to buy a paper one, but not this year.

Ironically I live about 3 miles form the factory where they are made.

I wanted to get one of the Boro ones but they'd sold out. Then was going to get a golf ball one from my golf club, but they'd also sold out. I have bought numerous paper ones, but I also like the pin badges as they are a bit of keep sake with having the year on.

I'd never given it a thought until you mentioned it. I have definitely seen less 'street sellers' as in older ladies and gents selling them.

I bought mine from Tesco. They had a big table at the exit selling everything from metal badges to stickers etc.

I thought the idea was to make a donation each year by buying a paper one.
Are those enamel ones a way of saving money?
There's actually a poppy thong you can buy now

I've managed to end up without one so far this year. I've never had cash on me whenever I've been out n about and seen the poppy sellers. Just realised it's 11/11 today 😮

The metal ones also imply that you've bought it so you don't have to in future years!

They certainly seem thin on the ground in London. I don't do supermarkets but so far the only place I've seen them is a stall on Waterloo station. The usual pubs and shops don't have them. And I'm certainly seeing fewer people wearing them.

Without getting too morbid, could it be possible that a lot of the regular poppy sellers have died or are being more careful due to the pandemic?

They were always pensioners whenever I saw them.

Not being funny but I'd be telling your colleague to mind his own business, how rude! IMO, anyway.

I've seen the odd stall in supermarkets and unless my brain has made it up there was one outside in the middle of Yarm High Street the other day.

Both the wife and I have struggled to buy/donate to poppy sellers this year.

I bought my wife a brooch poppy some years back and I wear a pin poppy (for ever losing a paper one). We both make separate donations but she’s said that the schools and colleges haven’t been selling them. I use to make my donation at school but have just retired.

I will catch them on Sunday.
