Playing out from the back

I’ve not got a problem with passing out from the back, and in theory it actually works best against teams who press like we were pressed today. However it relies on everyone in the team being able to do it or it goes horribly wrong. Nothing wrong with the keeper or defence for it today, but Hackney and Barlaser let it down.

Naming Hackney is just deflection. It worked well once he moved into CM. Barlaser and O'Brien failed miserably. And Barlaser fails against the press every time. He loves it when team sit inside Preston and Cardiff. His two best games

A deflection? Did Hackney not cost us a goal passing out from the back today?

It works with the right players... Fry is a stopper not a ball player and it always shows. Rav can do it well, Clarke can do it well, Lenihan can do it well. It also helps if we have someone who can play a ball for Engel to run on to as opposed to having to check and retrieve the ball.
I didn't want to say it but, you're right: unless you have the right players, it becomes a shambles like we saw today and have seen before.
Maybe we ask too much of a squad incapable of doing things consistently? :(

The defenders are frightened because without howson and hackney there are no midfield options showing to pass to.

I could probably put this on a number of threads to be fair, but one of the biggest issues at the minute is the loss of Jones (and to a lesser extent Lath).

One of the risks of pressing really high up the pitch is the space you leave in behind.

If the opposition beat the press you're wide open. But far less dangerous if they don't have the pace to exploit it.

We don't currently have the pace to make teams think twice about doing it.

Jones is so key for us as an outlet and also the opposition have to careful not to press us too high as we can get behind with his pace.

Im sure yesterday Bristol would not have out so much high pressure on us had ajones been there.

Teams know we are going to try it and set-up accordingly. Bristol City did a job on us first 20 minutes, pressing high up the pitch which resulted in us struggling to get out of our half then finding ourselves 2-0 down.

I don't know why we don't mix it up and play it long now and again, especially in the first 20 to 30 mins when players are fresh and close down quickly. It was suicide football today.
We can't play it long because we don't have anyone capable of holding the ball up. It's just a complete mess of a situation.

I agree it's not ideal at the moment but if the opponents are pressing aggressively they will be leaving pockets of space in their own half you can drop the ball into. You can also ask the full-backs to put the ball down the line or hit diagonals behind the defence i.e. keep it away from their centre-halfs. Even if the opponents defenders are winning most of the long balls you can look to pick up second balls.

I know it's not a fashionable way to play at the moment and I might be a bit old school but I'd rather lose the ball in the opponent's half than just outside our own penalty area.

Also the Bristol press was only really a problem for the first 30 minutes when their players were fresh and pressed quickly. Once the game settled down we could play out from the back but by then the damage was done. I think we need to be a bit smarter and mix our game up a bit.

I will go back to what JFH said about our performance at Chelsea.

Even Man City go long ball at times.

What's the point of letting teams press you, and never using the space they leave in behind to punish them. We are half baked with our current approach.

Sunlun was the same high line but with no one to exploit it so nothing to worry about.

This first became obvious at Chelsea, where at tomes they had 6 men pressing us. It was followed up against Sunderland and now Bristol. Clubs have learnt how to play against us and we have no plan B.

Unfortunately we don't seem to replicate the pressure at the other end, where we insist on sticking to one, or occasionally two men pressing when they have it.

This is why we’re missing a fit Coburn so much, it gives us a different option and makes us so much less predictable when players receive the ball from the keeper.
Form with Coburn in the team playing at least 40 minutes is literally top two promotion winning form, including beating probably the best two teams in the division (and Chelsea), form without him is literally relegation form.

off the top of my head it’s something like Played 14 points 32. Not played (or played 5 minutes) 16 games won a mighty 9 points.

In my opinion the most underrated player in the whole squad.
