Playing field west of Whinney Banks?

Can someone help me and my brother and let me know what the playing fields to the north-west of Whinney Banks were called? Now the shopping centre I guess... I remember going to see him play there in the late 1960s and then I'm sure I played school football on there, perhaps it was near St Michael's school?

It was called Sammy's Field, I played all my junior football games there for Archibald School, St Michael's school field backed onto it.....

Do you mean where the cinema is , if so I think it was known as Hustler playing field, the changing rooms if I remember correctly were on the Stockton Road side of the A66 , we had to cross over the footbridge to get to the pitches, if the wind was blowing in the right direction there was always a strong smell of pigs , not sure if there was an abattoir or just a pig farm south of there it was a long time ago 🤔

There were pig farms past the cabbage club (think it was the called that) at the top of Northern Road/Maldon Road...you could see them as you came across the bridge over the A19.

Yes. I also knew it as ‘Hustlers’. We’d access it by walking down the path from Whinney Banks Rd / Eckert Ave, past the allotments and ‘pig alleys’ to the ‘Cabbage Club’ area. It was bordered on its west side by a council incinerator I think. The building of the A66 split the changing rooms from the football pitches which were then accessed via footbridge.

Defo Hustlers my dad managed Whinney Banks teams in the 70's / 80's and that was their home ground. Used to go regular as a bairn to watch.

Played there a few times for Whinney Banks round about 1970- 71. I know 1 of the games was against St Michael's cos I think it was the only one that we won. As smellyhelly says very fiesty/competitive games in those days!

It was council run, had 3 football pitches and I think a couple of hockey pitches, there was a couple of wooden changing huts back in 1967, there was a large wooden fence that separated St. Michael,s playing field from it..

Our cross country run from St.Michaels was down Stockton Road, turn left down the pig alleys to the Cabbage Club then turn left back down the alleys then down the path between our school field and the the speedway track. Always interesting dodging the pigs, mad dogs and chickens.

Ours was post A66.
Down the alley off Connaught Road, leading the the Speedway pub, cross the bridge over the 66, along West Lane, turn right down Maldon Rd, run past the pig alleys, over the bridge to Hustlers field, cross that and turn right onto Stockton Road then back to school.
