Planning an Amsterdam trip

We’ve been quite a few times and always stayed in the City
I’d recommend you have a look at Haarlem before you decide where to stay - just done 4 nights there.

Gorgeous town with great restaurants, bars, coffee shops (both kinds) and lovely people.
Really easy to walk around with a couple of good museums
8 trains an hour to Amsterdam central - running til the early hours (15 mins to Amsterdam Central). We‘Ve had 2 day visits to the city,.

No crowds, no stags, no sex Shops - so it’s not for everyone 😳

Hmmm. But can a deli offer that combination of sustenance and arcade style game of chance? Sounds pretty mind.
Haarlem FEBO - one of 3

Of course, only to be eaten after 2am when a nuclear frikandel can rest easy on the stomach ...

you missed a recent grand opening!

We once stopped in Zaandam. Two stops - about 15 mins - from Amsterdam central. A lovely little place and this hotel has the most comfortable hotel beds I've ever slept in.

Sometimes it's nice to get out of the manic atmosphere of the city centre.

Just got back yesterday from a weekend in Dam. Stayed in a nice hotel just outside the centre but even in Jan it's still super busy with tourists.

Tended to spend most of our time around De Pjip and the South with a slightly more "local" vibe.

Id definitely consider staying outside the city next time.

I found Amsterdam to be really sleazy.. and the beer.. jeepers! Not my cup of tea at all. Not being a fan of prossies or weed.. I went to the Anne Frank museum.. the Dutch totally grassed her up.. lazy nazis.

Anyway.. found a theme park not too far away and it was AMAZING I think a local firm offers trips there specifically. ‘Family Outings’

We struggled to find a decent bar in Amsterdam - just overcrowded places with poor choice.
Haarlem was infinitely better and the standard of coffee (I do mean the drink) was outstanding.

The suggestions to stay outside are good for Amsterdam’s city centre is ruined now. I stayed in Utrecht recently which has many of the good features of Amsterdam such as canals, historic centre, terrific bars and a lively student culture. About 30 minutes to Amsterdam by frequent trains but also very convenient for other major towns. But it is becoming an alternative choice for stag/hen weekends so be quick!

Oh really? That's a shame, Utrecht is on our list.

Id second Rotterdam, actually preferred it to AMS when we visited both earlier in the year. Not as pretty but a really vibrant modern city.

I lived at Blaak for a year, fully agree, it’s not as pretty but has its own vibe (with less Brit tourists)

Delft is also a lovely place to stay, especially when it gets warmer. It's a university town/city so is buzzing every night in the bars and has some lovely restaurants.

Utrecht is a lovely city for a short break.

Was thinking about Groningen too; anyone been there at all?
I’ve stayed in Groningen, it’s a bit more chilled with a sandy beach and easy transport links to The Hague. It was a welcome escape after 4 nights in Amsterdam!
