Photography geeks - Can anyone recommend me a camera

I have a Panasonic Lumix which is great for very basic photography.
I also have a mirrorless Olympus OMD EM10 which is tiny and really excellent until I get the biggest zoom lens on it and then the quality suffers quite a bit in comparison to a Canon or Nikon.

I also have this Olympus, like the look of it and takes great pictures. Got some good shots from the front row away at Peterborough the season before last.

Often there are offers on the camera/lens bundles too if you want more than one lens, but the standard one is fine for starting out. I have three lenses, but only because I like to pretend I'm better than I am!

Be wary that if you buy a camera like the above mentioned 550d, it's an aps-c sensor so that means you either have to buy EF-S lenses, specifically made for it; or any traditional lens you have to multiply by 1.6 to get what it will look like on apps-c so the above mentioned 24-105L, which is quite versatile on a full frame camera, becomes 38.4-168mm equivalent view which is great for framing things far away but less great for wide angle.

I'd personally get a cheaper used full frame camera than a crop one but it's down to preference

Jazzy cameras are great and I used to have a really expensive set of canon and Nikon dslr, but money is better spent on lenses once you've got an ok body.

I did say that, with the crop it becomes 35 to 160 or whatever. In my experience, it's good for everything from CU portraits to landscape to medium range wildlife. I have other lenses but seldom need to change. I've used it to take photos for an exhibition and book (Heathcliff Adrift), a 6x4m photowall for an airport, several music videos and sundry other images that have sold, and I still use that set up on pro jobs (as does a friend of mine who is one of the country's leading music and event photographers... she refuses to upgrade).

I'll probably go full frame mirrorless at some stage, but the investment is substantial if I want to future proof myself for a while.
I'd still say it's a good rig for a beginner ... though the 24-105 ain't necessary. The kit lenses were serviceable for a beginner.
