Phone Contracts

Upgrade .......... what a masterly bit of consumer psychology. Took some years for Mrs Chickenrunner to understand she wasn't getting 'summat for nowt' and they weren't 'doing her a favour out of the kindness of their hearts'. She was buying a new phone when the old one was perfectly serviceable.

You're due an upgrade = You're coming to the end of your contract and we'd rather like you to buy a new phone even though you don't need one.

What do people want from a Mobile. To me:
1. It's a phone
2. I can check social media
3. I can watch Sports if required
4. It takes photos
5. I can download whatever.

Mine does all that. Why do people pay extortionate prices for something that in reality costs pounds to make, but are more than happy to pay £40 X £24 contract for a bit of plastic equalling £960, which invariably be out of date, as phone companies say, in 6 months.

They aren't made out of plastic. In fact when the pixel 3 came out Somone worked it how much it would cost you to make it yourself it was something like £300 just to buy all the components

Why do people purchase anything, I have a perfectly reasonable Suzuki car that has never let me down and gets me where I need to go but I still see people buying a brand new Mercedes that only does what my car does.

I have been SIM only for years. Still get enough Data for myself and pay £4:22 a month. I just go and buy a new phone when I need one. I just feel these 2 year contract is just a money make and of course your tied in with little chance of breaking the contract without cost.

Yes, I bought a refurbed phone 2 years ago for £100, and I have a SIM only deal for £6 per month. The phone does what I need and the data and minutes are more than enough for me. I'll get a 5G phone at some point next year, but again I'll go for refurbed. Paying £30+ a month for a phone is just unnecessary for me, but for some people I guess it's what they want.

Why do people join gyms when they’re rocks and logs to lift outside?

Why boil the kettle at home when you can use a flask and use the kettle at work?

Smartphones are a pretty mature piece of technology now. Even 'tech' reviews acknowledge that they are pretty boring with nothing radically new, in terms of hardware or software, coming into the market place. That means that a 2 year old phone is still a decent piece of kit.
I fully understand that people get used to shelling out on a 'device plan' and are quite happy to continue, that's fine. I know someone who always gets a new phone at the end of their contract then spends the next 6 months complaining about it due to a lack of familiarity with the new* software.

* - another piece of tech industry trickery. Different does not equal better.

My phone is 6 years old and the string between the cans battery life is just starting to become an issue (what was wrong with removable batteries?). I've thought about a refurbished unit, where did you get yours from Soutra?

I used to love the day when I was due an upgrade and could get myself a new mobile. Now I dread the day when my phone needs replacing with the fear of losing data, contacts etc and having to remember those stored passwords on apps etc.

Also, modern music is rubbish.

I've become my Dad.

Yeah, there's that as well. I was trying to keep those fears suppressed, cheers.:LOL:
