Phillips

Very lucky to stay on the field last night after three horror tackles, he was incredibly rusty and and off the pace but it’s to be expected when he’s not playing regularly. He needs to be playing week in week in a regular basis before next summer because by rights on another night he’s walking and we are down to 10.

If he doesn’t leave City in January for game time he shouldn’t be going to the Euros, his lack of match fitness was visible to everyone.

Biggest issue is if he doesn’t it means we will likely have to suffer Henderson playing more than he should be. As can’t see someone new coming into the fold nearest was Gallacher but I’d prefer an unfit Phillips or a past it semi retired Henderson over him. 🤦‍♂️

Agree - both Phillips and Gareth were lucky tonight - another referee could have sent him off before 10 minutes had gone then again after 65 minutes.
The headlines this morning could have been very different.

Definite second yellow therefore off, we were lucky. He needs to go on loan for game time. I would suggest City loan him to a team where they can trust the manager, maybe someone with connections to that city, to put him straight in their team, maybe a team where they have a precedent of doing just that, even if the player were to drop down a division, that team would certainly have to be in a proven need of a holding midfielder…….. If only I could think of such a team. Maybe the England manager may even have a connection too 🤔

Ok, I can hope, no matter how unlikely 😉

To be honest I think we’d still have beaten them with 10

Horror tackles, no, poor tackles yes

What annoyed me was the amount of fouls by Italians where they just push someone over from behind, no attempt for the ball yet never yellow cards. Also the block on Foden in the box, maybe not a penalty but obstruction, you never see indirect free kicks in the area any more, has there been a rule change? Its either penalty or no penalty.

Must admit, I wonder if we'll see a change in VAR rules going forward, potentially considering second yellow card offences where it would result in a red.

At present they only consider direct red cards but that one where he missed the ball and went studs up into the lads' ankle last night would be a clear second yellow (on VAR). Can only assume the ref missed it in real time.

as was studs up almost in the face on 2 mins.

He was v lucky.

He's not good enough for us, if we want to be challenging for the biggest trophies.

There is no surprise whatsoever, that Pep doesn't play him, even when Rodri isn't available.

He shouldn't even be in the squad, let alone be nailed in our first 11.

We are desperate for a CM to emerge to partner Rice, to allow Jude to play #10.

Jude has to play #10, he's one of the best (if not the best) in the world at that position currently, which means Rice needs a partner at #6.

Unless we put Stones there, which would leave us very light at CB, then I'm struggling to see who would be good enough for us to partner Rice.

None of Gallagher, Henderson, Phillips are close to good enough.

He was, but there was no contact and the Italian lad went down holding his face, think the ref spotted that one and may have acted were it not for a) being early in the game and b) the gamesmanship from Italy.

Probably still a yellow mind.

I would put TAA in there

A bit sad for Phillips because he looks shadow of the player he was before he went to Man City, but a couple of years of match inactivity takes its toll. A player takes a risk when they go to the big big boys. I suppose his bank balance will be a consolation. At the moment he looks an international liability.

Yeah, I'd agree with that, the ref saw it knew there was no contact and let it go as early in the game. He deffo got lucky with that one in the second half though. I think Phillips can/could play that holding role for England but he needs match time. I don't like Connor Gallagher in that role, especially against a team "well practised in the dark arts" he is likely to lose it and get sent off. I think you could move Stones to No6 and play Guéhi who slotted in well when he came on for Stones.

I think the time was def a factor

He does but he's clearly given up on his Man City dream now, and is looking to get playing again. I think he will leave in January

It's a shame because he's a good player, and his midfield partnership with Rice has been effective for us in the past, but he shouldn't even be making the squad whilst he's at City and not getting any game time.

I think already Southgate's thinking will be that he can play him in the friendly games leading up to the tournament, to get him match fit, but it just sends out a terrible message to other English midfielders, that basically it's irrelevant how well you're performing for your club team, because Phillips will still be in regardless.

Rice and Stones could be a brilliant pairing for us in midfield but I'd imagine Southgate will want to keep Stones in defence, and we're not blessed with options for that CB position.
