Phil Foden

Phil Foden is the fifth player to reach 20 goals and 10 assists in all competitions for a side in Europe's big five leagues this season. Kane, Bellingham, Watkins and Salah are the others. England are in a very good place for the Euros.

Saka on 16 goals and 12 assists, too. So should get there by the end of the season.

England’s front 4 all with 20 and 10 😮

Foden absolutely smashing it this season and, along with Rodri, is carry City in this title race.

But he doesn't score in friendlies for England so he's sh!te

Looks like me and Pep both have a lack of knowledge when it comes to where we think Foden's best position is.

Im just putting across my opinion of a player theres really no need to talk down to people who have a different opinion so ill bow to your greater footballing knowledge and leave it here.
Can we have an update on this after last night, please?

I believe he played as a #10. With Grealish and Doku occupying the wings.

Anyone know how Foden got on?

We all know how good Foden is.

The problem regarding England is that to get the best from Foden, he has to play the number 10 role or at a push playing from the right. He is not effective enough from the left, its as simple as that. Playing Foden on the left is no different to issues we had all them years ago of forcing Scholes, Lampard and Gerrard into the starting XI.

I honestly dont know how we fit Foden, Saka and Bellingham in and keep the balance.

Foden has not yet shown it for England, He is a product of Man City and the style of City is so far away from England's style.

I do think he will start on the left, purely because the other options on the left are not setting the world alight (Gordon is probably the best this season but i dont think Southgate will take him due to inexperience and Grealish and Rashford will be the two for the left) but we wont see the best of Foden. We have some outstanding talent but a good chunk are all wanting the same position.

Foden may get a better look in when a new manager does come in with new ideas and a new style of play.

The difference is that Foden has actually played the majority of his career as a wide player. Scholes didn't play most of his wide left, Gerrard didn't play most of his sat as a CDM.

Foden has played 123 out of 160 games out wide, 41 goals and 25 assists. Hardly ineffective at league level but hasn't been at international level. 923 minutes played central, 2 goals and 4 assists in that position, which isn't bad, but it was against the minnows that he achieved anything. Ideally we would play him at 10...but....who plays left and how will this impact Bellingham who is potentially the best 10 in the world.

Stan Collymore suggesting playing Foden as a 10 and Bellingham alongside Rice as an 8.

I think that could work against the teams England should beat, but not against the best teams.

Everyone focusses on our strengths, but we have to consider our weaknesses too, because the top opponents will. None of our midfield options (other than the aged Henderson) are good out of possession. People think defending is about tackling, it isn't it's about blocking passing lanes, learning to read press triggers, decision making, pressuring the ball, delaying the opposition options, getting the gaps right between units. If you aren't very good at these, top players will exploit you. Even Rice, our best defensive player out of Foden, Bellingham and Rice, isn't anywhere near world class at this.

We will absolutely blow away poor teams, but I'm yet to be convinced we can do the same with good teams, purely because of the personnel available and I haven't even talked about our CB pairings or left side of defence.

Totally agree.

I’ve been an advocate of playing Foden and Bellingham alongside Rice but the emergence of Mainoo probably means it’s going to be Foden on the left which isn’t a bad thing. The stats show he’s pretty good on that side anyway. The key will be getting the front three and Bellingham switching and being more fluid to unsettle defences which they’re all very capable of.

Yet another game in which Foden plays as the #10 and looks world class, whilst scoring an absolute screamer...there's a theme emerging here...

And last night was against one of the best teams in world football, in their own backyard.

I think Bellingham is nailed on for that position but it must be making it a harder decision for Southgate now.

It was easier when Foden wasn't playing consistently as a 10 to make him fit on the left side.

Would you play him 10 over Bellingham?

Saka scored a beauty last night too. Having the front four fit and on form could be massive for England.

Kane

Bellingham
Saka
Foden

What a line-up that is.

He's got to fit them both in.
He either plays Bellingham at 10 and Foden on the left or

He plays Foden at 10 and drops Bellingham back to the midfield.

Either way, one of them isn't in their best position. It's just the way it is. He'll get berated either way

Let’s hope whoever is picked can do for England it in a semi final or final against one of the really big international teams. They are the games that tell you who is truly world class and worth the hype.

Recently, Foden has looked unplayable in the #10.

Foden on the half turn is probably the best player in the world, in that position.

It's a nice headache for Southgate to have.

Also, Jack Grealish is starting to look like his best again and is coming into some great 'form'.

If he has a very strong end to the season (like he did last season), then Southgate could well have a big decision to make.

Didn’t watch the full match but I’m sure that the commentator said Pep made a tactical switch at halftime and moved Foden from 10 to wide right and put Silva at 10?
