Pfizer & Moderna set to pocket $32bn from Covid vaccines

I've said this on another thread... the BMJ have asked the government for details of the financial interests of the scientific advisors sitting on various COVID related bodies and have been refused.

I can join the dots.

As for foggy above... he's clearly lived a sheltered life (or works for a big pharma)

Always follow the money.

Just my luck to have Astrazeneca shares and they're giving it away!
Exactly. They'll probably be the ones getting into trouble. Pfizer and astrazeneca have a duty to maximise profits for their shareholders. If I had AZ shares I'd be very unhappy they weren't despite creating a much sort after solution.

Let's be clear, pfizer didn't just have the vaccine in their back pocket and thought "oh great, we can now profiteer off this pandemic." No, they spent millions on research and development, also they seem to have developed much of it BEFORE the pandemic. In essence they spent millions on research into a vaccine that might never have been needed. I think it's only right and proper that they are rewarded for their gamble. Imagine having a product that nearly 7 billion people need? Why wouldn't you maximise your profits from it?

They will have spent exorbitant amounts of money on staffing and lab facilities already.

They could well be paying penalty clauses on other projects and contracts sidelined for this and put back a year, delaying other profits, so I don't begrudge them making a lot of cash, but there will be significant costs behind those profits.

They’re selling it to developing countries at cost price
They may well be (and we'll ignore the fact that it will be their definition of "developing countries") but that's not what you said in your original post is it.

Reduced or cost price pharmaceuticals to certain countries is fairly standard in the industry, but as said, AZ's development costs for this vaccine will be huge, and they are totally within their right to recover those costs and make a reasonable profit

My understanding is that AZ have committed to selling it at cost throughout the pandemic. They’ll then sell for profit once the pandemic is over as the vaccines will likely become seasonal. They’re a public company so you’ll be able to scrutinise it once they release their financials
