Pete Doherty, who killed my son?

Documentary, 10pm on Channel 4 tonight.

Investigates the suspicious death of Mark Blanco, who fell off a balcony at a party Pete attended in 2006. An FBI expert has now claimed he was thrown.

I've always been a massive Doherty fan but this case has always made me feel uncomfortable. I'm almost certain Pete won't have been directly responsible but I have always wondered whether he knows more about what happened than what he's let on.

Should be an interesting watch anyway.

My mate told me about this accusation/rumour about 2 years ago. Interesting indeed.

Might as well put all of Kate Moss’ ex-boyfriends in one big prison somewhere.

Johnny 'Headlock', who was Pete's unofficial minder at the time walked into Bethnal Green police station and confessed to killing him, then retracted the statement shortly afterwards and was allowed to walk free.

Jesus.

Looks like this is another one getting cancelled.

That lass saying she couldn't account for Headlock and Roundhills' whereabouts after they'd thrown Mark out of the flat says it all really.

Doesn't take a rocket scientist to work out what will have went on.
True, but I guess we don’t know who actually did the deed still?

It's all very strange. I didn't know Pete had recorded himself singing 'Lost art of murder' at the flat a few months following Mark's death.

Pretty insensitive of him but I think he liked playing up to the "bad boy" image at the time and he probably did it knowing it would cause controversy. I'd like to think he probably regrets it now.

Who did it/if it was done aside. You don't step over someone who has fallen from a balcony (who may still be saved) and run away unless you're an absolute bell. Not sure I'll be able to listen to his voice again without the cctv playing in my mind.

I never understood the hype around him back when his popularity was at its peak, seemed to me he hung off the coattails of more talented and hard working people. The early Libertines stuff was okay but everything after especially his solo and Babyshambles stuff was bilge.

That said this is a low I wouldn't have thought he'd plummet to

Subjective isn’t it. For me the first Babyshambles album was as good if not better than the Libertines stuff. Not sure who in the Libertines was more talented though.

But this isn’t really about that is it. I think his music is great but I’m not going to give him a pass for murdering someone.

and recorded the video for his song in the same flat.

As you say it's subjective, I would say he fed off the talent of Carl Barratt who taught him how to play guitar, that said Barratt didn't have a stellar career outside the Libertines either.

Overall you could likely credit Doherty with the success and failure of the band, he attracted fans but for sure but ow many gigs did he fail to show up for? I do wonder if the adoration he received for being such a 'rebel' fed his ego and his direction that led to stuff like this happening, similar story with Russel Brand.

Wouldn’t be at all surprised.

Have to say, I’m a bit worried about Liam G as an Oasis fan, could imagine there being a motion to cancel him at some point. I’m more of a Noel fan though, less likely he’s done anything totally reprehensible.

Apparently it was Noel who had the nasty streak. I remember it was generally him who said the really offensive stuff about Blur, etc. I think Liam was just a lad with a big mouth, I remember him getting his teeth knocked out - according to the press - by a German bouncer and there was actually a real joy in some of the reporting on it. I would *imagine* he’d be fine to be honest. But who knows.

Noel has said all sorts of nasty stuff, none of it criminal. Saying nasty stuff isn’t what I’m talking about. Noel said one nasty thing about Blur, who he’s now mates with. Liam still condescends them to this day.

Liam was WAY more promiscuous, Noel was relatively straight laced and never really a “heart throb”. With promiscuity amongst celebrities comes a risk that at some point they’ve done something they shouldn’t. I’m, of course, totally speculating here. I mean Liam has got kids to 4 different mothers, not that there’s anything wrong with that but probably an indication of the sort of lifestyle he had given they’re all about the same age….

All so seedy, tragic, and regrettable.

Highlights clearly the cultural difference between London and the NE. Middle class, pretentious, faux people living in the London veneer of respectability - but still reliant on hard drugs to cope with life.

'Headlock' as a 'hard man' wouldn't survive long if he tried to throw his weight around on Teesside. North and South divide still alive and well. Though East Enders generally more down to earth, streetwise, and capable of handling themselves compared to those from the affluent areas of London.

I hope the family find some closure but it doesn't look likely.

"Blanco had been due to appear in The Accidental Death of an Anarchist, a play by Dario Fo where the protagonist falls or is thrown to his death from the window of a police station."

on one hand you could see how that might make it look like he threw himself of the balcony.. but then writing a song called the Lost Art of Murder should ring a few alarm bells.. then filming it at the scene of where that guy died.. wtf..

that guy Johnny was doing drugs and was so unstable and coked up that he handed himself into a police station and confessed to a murder.. but it is not possible that he was that unstable and coked up that he did actually kill the guy?

weirder still was that someone had already died from that flat in similar circumstances! LOCK EM ALL UP! dodgy as fook that pete doherty picks something off the floor next to the body of the guy that the woman with his says he ways dying.. then he steps over the body and runs off?

what was some daft little smack head doing with a bodyguard anyway? what does he need a bodyguard for? what does a bodyguard do? why hasn't he got a bodyguard now?

TBH I wouldn't draw too many conclusions about the north/south divide from it. Tragic event, and possibly an indication of how the Met operate (or used to operate) but there are crack dens like that all over the country. There are also plenty of Teesside 'hard men' who wouldn't last 5 minutes in East London. Obviously not forgetting that parts of East London are now 'posh'.

I mean the owner of the flat has had it happen to him twice, whilst running a drug den, and seemingly being a police informant. The awful bit is that all 3 of them (him, Pete and the bodyguard) know exactly what happened and won't pipe up. Felt very sorry for the mother.

I imagine bodyguard will have been an honorary title given to a few people in his entourage over the years as many people will have been sucking at the teat, "jobs for the boys" and all that.

If I remember right he was in with quite a few unsavoury types around that time.

I reckon the funds for personal bodyguards dried up around the same time the whole indie scene of the mid 2000's did if not before. I blame sex on fire.
