Payero?

Payero has quality and would be great in the current set up. He was a fringe Argentina player not long ago and if there’s any chance of him coming back the club will be doing whatever they can. It might just be too late unfortunately.
He’s never been a fringe Argentina men’s senior player, ever. He was a fringe u23 player

No chance either of those two, or any other European team has watched him this season and said "We want him. He's our man. £10m on the table. Have our eyes out." Agent talk. If he had had a great season, we'd all know about it, like when Spence had a good season and all the pundits questioned why we had let him go out on loan.
Why would they offer £10m when they could offer £1m extra to either club?

Hair splitting at its finest, classic messageboarding.
He’s not a fringe Argentina senior player. He’s never even had a full call up. That’s not hair splitting, it’s just a fact.

He’s a fringe Argentina player in the way that Julia Arca and Carlos Marinelli were i.e. they weren’t

You mean in the same way that Carlos de Penna was a fringe Uruguayan international?

Sorry to be a pedant: He’s got three full international caps for the Olympic Games matches and possibly more for the qualifiers, I didn’t have to look very hard to find that out but clearly FIFA consider the Olymipcs as proper matches and other countries do to. Maybe we turn our noses up because we don’t participate but there you go.

Men's Olympics football is an U-23 competition, you're only allowed 3 players in the whole squad over the age of 23.

It has never been a senior competition for European or South American countries, and barring a 4 year period between 1984-1988, it's never been a senior professional competition for anyone.

Martin Payero has never played a senior game for Argentina, or even received a call-up

He received 3 caps for the Argentina U23s.

You might view it that way and that’s cool but FIFA designates Olympic matches and qualifiers as A games. Messi considers his gold medal his most prized trophy (at least he did before the WC win) and if we had a team in it we’d take it just as seriously. He didn’t receive 3 under 23 caps he got got full honours and that is just the truth.

Errr, no, they don’t. It’s an u-23 tournament and this is absolutely nothing to do with englands lack of participation, that’s a red herring.

Nobody questions the honour of playing in the olympics and pride in winning it. But that isn’t relevant, it’s not a full international team because it’s age limited.

That's not the truth.

It is literally and legally an U23 competition.

He received 3 caps for the Argentina U23s.

The U21 Euros that are currently happening is the qualification route for European nations wanting to compete at the Paris 2024 Olympics, aka youth football.

South American qualification is going to be decided by a CONMEBOL Pre-Olympic Tournament between the U23 national teams of the federation, aka youth football.

It's a weird hill to take a stand on, because it's just a fact that it's not senior football.

It's only in women's football where it's a full senior competition and treated as a major football honour.

who decides that then, is it you? Or is it FIFA and all the national associations who give out the caps?
They’re u23 caps, not full Argentina caps, he has never been picked for the full first team squad. I’m happy to review any evidence where fifa confirm these are full international caps not u23

For instance, Messi has 5 caps for the Argentina U23s.
All earned at the 2008 Olympics where they won gold.

He got those 5 caps after he'd received 30 caps for the senior team, funnily enough, though he was still within the age criteria for the Olympics and wasn't competing as one of the 3 overage players.
