Payero starts for boca tonight

We are in a league with Luton Rotherham and Blackpool

Are you seriously arguing boca v river plate is a Lesser standard than Rotherham??

We are in the championship
Is the Scottish league stronger than the Championship because Rangers and Celtic are better than Rotherham?

I know you like Payero and want him to prove a lot of Boro fans and staff wrong but come on, let’s try and remain objective.

Even if he succeeds out there it proves nothing except he’s got talent (which I don’t think is in doubt) but it’s different from succeeding in The Championship for a number of reasons including language and culture.

Clear that he had ability, unlucky with injuries. I think if Warnock hadn’t be sacked when he had we might have seen more of him

I think he could well be in contention for a spot in Qatar

Argentina named 9 midfielders for their upcoming friendlies in a 32 man squad, he wasn't one of them.

I really doubt he'll be called up at the last minute unless he has an absolutely incredible October that thrust him in to contention.

Most of our good players aren't good enough for us if you read this Forum, it's only when you see their replacements you realise how good they really are

Not good enough for us though according to 90% of the posters on here.

And he is good enough because some random Argentinian called him the magician?

Who would you put him in the squad over?.... De Paul who Atletico signed for 24m? or Mac Allister who's just scored 4 in 6 for Brighton in the PL?

There's Lo Celso too who Spurs signed for 45 million? Angel Di Maria?

--------

I liked Payero, but the way this thread is going we'll be calling him the next Messi after he's made another 2 or 3 appearances

He is known to the Argentine squad set up through his Olympic call up so it wouldn’t take much to see him in contention.

He started ahead of Brighton’s macallister at the Olympics for instance.

It’s a long shot but not impossible.

Mac Allister started all 3 matches at the Olympics and has been a full international since 2019, the one game Payero did start was alongside him.

Be good if he did get a call up, if nothing else it boosts our chances of getting some money, but I don't think a few months will be enough time for him to break through.

He replaced him as sub in one game and he played in his preferred role in another.

The point is there’s clearly talent there that we should have persevered with.

Footballers are often suited to different leagues and playing in different tactical approaches with different styles

Same with Stuani, does anybody really think he would have scored dozens of goals playing in the championship against 6ft 4 old school centre backs?

Yes there is a myth that English football is so specialised that it needs more than foreign players are used to.

Have you seen halland rip this league to pieces just as he did Germany and Austria.

stuani got 7 goals in championship playing wide right. He would have scored many more playing up top.

He’s scored goals everywhere he’s been

If he did, then that could increase his worth and if the Boca contract isn't binding then maybe a spanish side would be to his liking for a nice fee. That is the perfect result for us

No one is saying it’s unique to English football. It happens in all Leagues including English players trying their hand abroad and it not working out.

It’s not about the League being better it’s about it being different. And it’s not just the league but some players can’t adapt to life in another country. Sometimes it’s just down to luck with injuries and management.

Some players it happens with, others it doesn’t. To use Harland as an example that is doesn’t happen is just silly.

Isn't it more to do with his communication problems. Lonely, other side of the world, doesn't speak the language, girlfriend unhappy, missing his family and friends. That isn't going to lead to good form on the field. They have 6 foot 4 centrebacks in south america too

I think people also need to be realistic about the quality of the league too. Yes Boca and a few others have some good players. They have some good years where they are stacked with quality but the standard isn't as high as it used to be. South American football domestically is not that great and the Argentinian league is home to some of the most turgid football that I've seen. It's a very low scoring league. You see the MLS snapping up the talented youngsters from Argentina now in the hope of beeding them in then selling them to Europe. There isn't much quality left once the bones have been picked. The upcoming influx of money into Brazil will change things even more.

Most of the teams in Argentina aren't levels above Championship sides.
