Passing out from the back

Why? We have some good footballers across the back 3 & 5, Fry, can pass or carry the ball, McNair is comfortable as a midfielder as he is at the back and Dijksteel is a converted midfielder.

I see absolutely no reason why we can play this way, more so given CW's track record, with the only fly in the ointment being the fact that we played in an opposite way under NW.
I'm happy with how CW is playing it: a mixture of short and long.

I thought how Swansea and Bournemouth insisted on always playing out from the back got them into trouble more often than not and, of course, didn't help either of them score.

Yep, agree with that. Its fine for Man City, Chelsea or Arsenal to do that - they have top quality ball playing defender's AND a midfield that can show for the ball in the right areas at the right times, but CW likes to get the ball moving forward faster than that I think, so I don't see us playing like that really.

Done right it is excellent . Man City are great at it but even they make mistakes. Just have to take the odd mess up in our stride and not let anxieties our get through to the players.

I think the pros outweigh the negatives to be honest. Agree there's no point doing it for the sake of it, and some teams have definitely been guilty of that over the years.

But done with a clear purpose it both helps defensively (if the opposition don't have the ball, they can't score) and offensively, particularly if the opposition want to press.

If they press the opposition either have to stretch their formation, or play a high line leaving space in behind. If they sit off, then you have easy possession at least up to the middle third.

I dont like it its unnecessary risk which gives you liitle reward. i am happy for a keeper to play it short but only when theres little pressure or danger. The key component for me is you need a goalkeeper who is very good with his distribution for it to work. When it fails its invariably the gk who puts his denfenders under pressure with a wrongly weighted or telegraphed pass. looking at it the other way if we press, set traps and win possession it is an easy way to make chances teams who play this way will undoubtedly be targeted. If you remember the Swansea game at home they were terrible for fannying around at the back and gave us chance after chance

If it tires the opposition out like it did against Bournemouth then great. They have to work harder to close us down. Our problems have been second half this season. We concede goals. In the second half we were comfortable against Bournemouth. In the last ten minutes against Bournemouth they were knackered

It potentially frees up space for others if you can beat the press. Howson is a bit of a worry for me though, as I noticed vs Bournemouth he was getting caught on the ball and nearly gave it to them on a plate with a sloppy backpass.

If we're going to play it out from the back effectively I feel we need a holding midfielder who can also act almost as a deep-lying playmaker...a Kalvin Phillips type midfielder.

Absolutely the right way to play, if the opposition press and you have the quality on the ball (which we have at this level despite Warnock‘s best efforts to coach it out of them) then you can create opportunities to attack at pace getting the other side turned. If they don’t press you have a better chance of retaining possession and eventually dragging them out of position to create opportunities.
Absolutely, 100% agree with this
And we have the players to carry the ball out, which draws our opponents players out creating gaps for others to pass into being incisive with our play, basically cutting through teams

ps; look at all the classic board members coming home kn this thread…..hello chaps!

I remember a pre-season friendly at Salford a few years ago, that I think was Woodgate's first game in charge. Even though he'd been at the heart of the Pulisball coaching team, he still thought we had the players to play out from the back.

Ryan Shotton's performance that day was genuinely one of the worst I've ever seen from a professional footballer. He played like he had concussion, and every time he took the ball from our keeper (Pears?) he gave it away. Every. Single. Time.

I was sat near Alan Moore - former Boro winger, now anti-vax lunatic, but then a scout for Wigan - and all of his scouting notes were just detailing what a joke our defence was in possession.

To Woodgate's credit, he finally caved after about 30 minutes and just told the keeper to launch it.

Woodgate; bless…..thinking we had the players in the likes of shotton to play out from the back.
that’s why he won’t ever learn the manager trade…he doesn’t even have the basics

I like it and it's the modern way. Getting our players used to it with confidence is key, even if mistakes are made.

However, it shouldn't be used 100% of the time as opposition will push up on the high press. When they do then the long ball over the top should be used to free up space.

Either way it's clear Wilder has a plan which is refreshing.

Thing is we probably did have the players. Wilder is managing it with Fry, McNair, Dijksteel Bola...... all were available to Woodgate.

Think the failures were more down to Woodgate's ability as a coach/tactician than personnel. You need to be a good coach to get it to work.

They played it short for their own goal. its easy pickings in this league to go after teams who play it short with the high press. Most teams aren't good enough to play out

They didnt really press us which surprised me and we did well knocking it around at the back - long may it continue
