Paddy Mcnair in front of dale fry is insanity

I’d have to agree with the sentiment of keeping Fry in front of McNair especially as Fry had really put on top class performances of late.
I just don’t think McNair is up to it in a back 4, he’s had more bad games than good when out under pressure in that role. He’s only really looked ok in a back 3

But he has, that's evidently not true.

He wouldnt get picked in a very succesful team if he hadn't.

Fry is a better defender, most people agree with that, but McNair is a far better footballer and allows us to dominate posession better.

They both have strengths and weaknesses, but in reality neither are a perfect fit.
Sorry. Just looking over the last 2 months and paddy has played more football than I realised, in some good results aswell.
I’ve been to most of the games and it largely went unnoticed.
Had a stinker today though

I get that, but for that spell in the second half I thought Lenihan was passing us into trouble and trying to be a bit too ambitious. Smith didn’t have his best game and was guilty of losing his man for the third goal, (and then McNair never picked him up either), Smith was wrong footed and maybe should have done better for the second, and maybe could have done better to intercept the cross for the 4th. First goal there was at least 2 or 3 other tackles that should have cleared the danger before McNair missed his.
Not saying he played well, far from it, but the blame doesn’t just lie at his door today.
I really like Smith and Lenihan but it’s wasn’t just about McNair today.
Listening to bbc tees, before I got angry and turned it off, it was all about Lenihan giving the ball away, they didn't mention McNair

Lenihan made 114 passes at 86%, McNair was 46 passes at 86%. They gave it away equally as badly. But Lenihan made a lot more positive passes.

Do you think lenihan is a better defender than fry?
I think Fry is a little more dominant in the air maybe, other than that I think its close. Lenihan defends on the front foot more than Fry.

But Lenihan is a way better footballer and all round the most suited to Carrick's style than anyone else in our squad.

Personally I don't believe McNair is any better than Fry at bringing the ball out of defence.
Having Fry in the team just gives us a much more solid base to build from.
McNair should never start before Fry or Lenihan but is a good back up at this level if either of them are injured or unwell.
All IMO of course.

I love the way people are piling on McNair by name and totally giving the man who made that decision a relatively free pass. Did McNair pick himself? Lots of people criticising are rightly suggesting Fry should start ahead of McNair when fit, but stopping short of blaming Carrick directly, why I wonder?

Lots of players from midfield to defence allowed Ruffels to dance through and score, the only bit missing was some red carpet. To pin the blame on McNair alone and suggest if Fry was in would have been a different outcome is impossible to say. 4 players were powderpuff at their first, Smith was not doing his job for the second, but you can argue others were to blame leading up to it too, Lenihan and possibly Forss were way out of position if i recall. The 3rd was collectively rank defending, everyone to a man ball watching and Howson and Lenihan allowing 2 Huddersfield players to be in front of them was criminal. The fourth was once again players ball watching, a failed powderpuff challenge from whoever was holding their hands aloft and 3 Boro players allowing Pearson the freedom of the penalty box as it bounced through.

McNair could not be held responsible for all that carnage and it is wrong to do so, hanging him out to dry for others mistakes is unfair. I accept he was poor, I believe Fry should have started if fit, McNair played his part in their first goal that set the hare running, but lets not scapegoat him for the failings of Hackney, Howson, Lenihan, Smith, Giles and others too. The whole team were comatose defensively asleep after a first half of walking football. They were shell-shocked at the first goal and nobody started to do their job. It looked like they came out half asleep, they had no fire in their bellies, It looked like Carrick must have read them a bedtime story rather than get them fired up for a battle second half.

The manager, his coaches and the entire team must collectively hold their hands up for that disastrously pathetic second half capitulation and ensure it never happens again. They ALL are culpable for thinking the game was over and Huddersfield would continue to sit back. We all know Warnock would have roasted his team at half team, it seemed like our lot had some cocoa and a bedtime story.

The fact that we have won with huge scores this season and played glorious football with fry in really doesn't hold water the argument we need McNairs footballing ability. The argument is over today once and for all carrick must pick fry over McNair irrespective of opposition. The international equivalent of having McNair at cb would be picking eric dyer at cb for England
Games like Millwall 1-0 is where paddy McNair started we endured some pressure

2-0 Watford in one of best performances under carrick

Dael fry was the reason we lost to Sunderland

Paddy McNair has more clean sheets than dael
Fry
Dael frys goals conceded is less than a goal a game for his boro career. McNair is over a goal a game as a boro player. One is one of if not the best centre back in the division the other has the concentration of a goldfish at the back. We played the goldfish yesterday

Good post, the singling out of McNair is incredibly over simplistic.
