Over the last 30 years.... Which Player(s) "deserve" a statue?

This will probably(definitely) be controversial but I think in times gone by, certainly in the days before message boards and social media, someone like Stewart Downing would be in line for some sort of recognition. A boy from Pallister Park came through our youth system to win 30-odd caps for England and play in a World Cup, was a member of the only Boro team to win a major trophy, played in two European runs culminating in playing a key role in getting us to a UEFA Cup final, made over 400 senior appearances for the club, won automatic promotion with the club after dropping down from the division above, and also won the young player of the year and player of the year awards in his first time with Boro. Look at the list of names in our all-time appearance lists and he is right up there. He has had an outstanding career that won't truly be appreciated until much, much later on in life. Which is quite sad really, IMO, because he is exactly the sort of player the Boro should pride themselves on producing.

Southgate surely does.
Captained the team to our only ever major trophy and a European cup final, we've never got bigger than that.

I think the club definitely needs someone from that period commemorating.
maybe not a statue, but how about a Garetth Southgate Bobble head? You could even make it life size if you like?

na. too much of a f@nny ;)

none of 'em - and its always wrong to produce a statue whilst the person is still alive.

Gareth deserves one in time - but we chased him down the road - so its pointless.
Agree with this. Find it unnerving seeing statues put up and the person then attending the revealing...

I don’t believe there are any players from the last 30 years that would be in the same bracket as Mannion, Hardwick & Clough in terms of statues.

I do believe though that there should be some form of recognition (statue, mural or similar) outside the stadium to Sir Bruce and the boys of 86 - from the lowest possible starting point, their achievements not only on the field but galvanising the fans and bringing pride back to the area more than matches anything Steve McLaren’s teams did

Totally agree

The stick he got during his time here - especially the second spell - was ridiculous.

Most other clubs are proud when one of their own breaks through the team and helps take the club to the next level.

He definitely warrants being in the discussion with the likes of Mogga, Southgate, etc. IMO

Probably Mark Schwarzer for all he's achieved and his dedication to the club. Probably not fashionable enough for a statue though.

We had that nicely covered with the club badge with 1986 on it until the daft decision to change it.

Agree with this too.

Brilliant servant to the club and it still annoys me the fact we didn't give him the 3 year contract he wanted.

I think we'd have stayed up if we kept him.

I listened to his podcast when he interviewed Downing and it was horrible to listen to the way he left the club, after all those years.

Should've went out on such a high for what he did with & for us and yet he was basically bombed out.

The Man City penalty save will forever be one of the best moments in our history.

I was a massive fan of Downing during his first spell, the stick he got for not getting "stuck in" was ludicrous given the amount of assists he crrated and the quality of his play. I also thought he got some unfair treatment with England, ok he didn't excel but he seemed to get criticism when other bigger names got away with being under par.
The 2nd spell he was massively disappointing for me considering his ability. Far too happy to go through the motions playing the simple ball and passing the responsibility to others when i was excpecting him to use his experience to be able to dictate play a little.
