Our centre backs

Does MC pick 2 out of a hat each week?

Fry has been good this season and today would of been better option than Edmundson whom was shaky all game.

What’s happened to rvb, he looks totally unaware of what is happening around him and looks slow, today got caught over the top numerous times. Poor season so far.

It also doesn’t help when you have a LB whom cannot defend at all.

I like Ayling, nice guy but he looks shot.

Well it's 2 from 3 now. How we've allowed ourselves to end up with only 3 centre backs is a joke. Then at right back only Ayling and Dijksteel. Words fail me.

Very strange decision by Carrick to play Edmundson ahead of Fry. The fact that Fry is a local lad and the game would have meant a lot to him was another reason why he should have started.

The strange thing about the centre backs is at some point this season, they have all played well and been praised on here.

Clarke was class at one point, but performance wise dropped away for example.

Let's face facts, at least 3 of that back four should not be playing whilst van den Berg looks like a very pale shadow of his earlier promise. That they are - is a combination of clueless recruitment and Carrick's complete inability to make us difficult to beat.

The LB who can't defend at all was by far our best defender tonight.

Giles is immune from criticism tonight for me. He played well. A freak own goal doesn't change that.
I saw a lot of criticism for Giles and I don't get it, I thought he defended pretty well considering he was up against Roberts although a lot of the time he did have help from Burgzorg who was covering the inside path unlike at their place where Borges was left to defend 1v1 against him all game.

By far the most threat we've had down the left side all season as well, I'm very happy to see him back in a Boro shirt. Iling-Jr looks like he puts a shift in as well so I fancy those 2 to form a decent partnership down that side. I get that we probably signed Giles will the idea that McGree, Azaz or Burgzorg would play out there, they would drift inside and free up all the space for Giles whereas Iling-Jr and Giles probably both want to be hugging the touchline. I just hope Carrick doesn't try to be too clever and avoid playing them together.

Fry hasn’t been perfect and was at fault in the Cardiff game. His mistake led directly to a goal. Unless not fit he should have played tonight though.
He is streets ahead of Edmundson. He has been at fault for a goal in pretty much every match he has played.

And ayling has fallen off a cliff, his mistakes now are getting worse every week. Basic, basic things like controlling the ball, body shape etc.

Have we got any defender inc full backs that can do a job like say Ayala, festa or pogatetz did, real strong challenges, they also got the crowd going many times by doing this, these players done it many a time, but not one of ours can or do, powder puff comes to mind. we are so weak in challenges, rvb goes near a player then shots his hands up, just get stuck in. if anyone does it’s Ayling but unfortunately after last nights debacle I can’t see him getting much more game time.

I think Giles and Illing Jr will form a good partnership down the left. Where that leaves Burgzorg I don’t know, but harsh to drop him. He should’ve gone to the right last night or up top when Azaz went off.

I honestly would not play Giles, I’m not sure you can play him and llling Jnr as both will just want to do the same thing.

I noted that he found himself (rvb) ahead of defensive line on a few occasions last night

He did a few times I mentioned this in another post, they played some great through balls and over the top and he was nowhere a few times, he seems to lack awareness and isn’t quick enough to recover.
