Was thinking the other day about players we've picked up who were doing nothing at the clubs we signed them from and ended up being excellent signings.
The obvious 2 that spring to mind are Graeme Souness plucked from Spurs youth team and Stephen Pears languishing In Man Utd reserves.
Any others ?

Dani Ayala couldn’t get a kick in at Norwich. Likewise Villa had all but given up on Adama Traore!

Didn’t Bernie write to every Football League team offering his services?
And Scottish Football League club, too. He’d refused to sign a contract at Albion Rovers and had burned bridges with them as well! Luckily we were the first ones to reply, and the rest is history.

Ziege is a great shout. Very much out of favour at Milan.

Mendieta probably qualifies too, Lazio couldn't wait to get rid.

Ince too. £1m for a player of his ability/status was practically giving him away.
Gazza? Fell out of favour after a second flute playing incident at Rangers and everything had begun to unravel for him at that point in his life.

Wasnt really a success at boro though was he? Showed flashes of his old self but was well past his best

Even getting the boot from England by Hoddle didnt reignite his fire to prove Hoddle wrong

John Hendrie

John Hendrie wasnt exactly sitting on the bench doing nothing for leeds he played a part in their division 2 championship season until he got injured and why he commanded a £500k fee to be signed

'He spent just one season at Leeds but was voted in the top 100 Leeds players in 2000'
