Openly gay players

We do still have an element of our crowd who boo the taking of the knee and cheer louts running on the pitch.
While 90% of our home crowd would have no problem, and actually respect an openly gay player, I do think there would engage in mindless abuse.

Gary Lineker reporting today that 2 Prem players are very close to being able to announcing they are gay.
Wonder if they are waiting for the World Cup to start.

As others have said its a risk but, hopefully the vast majority of us will support them and allow others some breathing space.
I think Lineker's comments are a bit pushy really, saying 2 players should come out for the world cup, it will increase speculation around the England squad. Why put pressure on these players they will come out when they are ready, i also think they will get a really positive reaction from the public

i dont know why the OP has equated a footballer's sexual orientation with Racism and racist abuse.

or why a focus on 'away' fans - do people change into a different skin between being at home and going away ? - Racism home or away is not up for debate - its illegal - i would expect people doing that to have their collars felt by plod.
i am sure homophobic chants are just as illegal

Personally I still think abuse from away fans on Match days would be pretty horrendous.

My experience is that I find it more difficult to go to away games now than I did 10-15 years ago because I hear more racist/misogynist (toward female fans) from the coked up lot than I used to.

Last year at Sheff Utd (team was awful), but the lads in front never watched any of the football - shouting stuff at the opposition fans for 90 minutes. Including homophobic stuff at a lad in the home section.

Steward not wanting to do anything.

I wear slightly effeminate clothing on occasion and can have all sorts shouted at me just walking down the street. I think others think society has moved on more than it has.
This is disgusting and uncalled for. I cannot understand why people pay money for a ticket and spend the entire game abusing other fans, home or away. Sadly, we have to breathe the same air as these neanderthals and the only hope is that they will mature as they get older. I appreciate many do not.

The rise in cocaine taking is also a concern and a reflection of its rise in society as whole. Thankfully, the vast majority of fans are accepting of everyone, regardless of ethnicity or sexuality.

I mention away games because that is where I've experienced it.

Some people love "the atmosphere" - but I want to watch the football and have a bit of a sing. Not shout abuse at the other team/other fans under the guise of banter.

You don't get the ten man queues for the toilet stalls at home games... I suspect that has alot to do with it.

Peoples race and their sexual orientation are both things that are the subject of hate and discrimination. I don't think it's that far fetched to compare the kind of abuse someone might get for being gay to the kind of abuse someone might get for being black?

And the focus on away fans... typically they are a rowdier lot, that are under the influence of something. There is more singing and "aggro" from the away end, typically speaking. Not to tar everyone with the same brush obviously, but a bit of a generalisation I agree.

I don't think the vast majority of fans care either way to be honest. People are not as narrow minded on the whole and often drawing attention to things like this just makes people irritated by its over exposure. We have moved on in society, thankfully. and often the media like to promote the message that we haven't. A dramatic, exaggerated story will sell more newspapers than a real one.

Does a family living in Loftus, or a kitchen sink estate in Boro, spend time discussing whether a footballer is gay, trans or bisexual ect? Probably not as they are more concerned with where the money is coming from to pay the rent or put food on the table.

I think this was exemplified in an article I read in one of the newspapers at the start of the covid pandemic. The page was full of stories of suffering, death, predicted death, and the concern expressed around finding a vaccine. At the bottom of the page there was a small piece describing the singer Sam Smiths 'ordeal' and 'anguish' around opening up about his sexuality.

It felt to me like it had been put there to highlight something there was enough awareness of. It seemed out of place at a time when the country was worried about its future and rising death numbers due to a pandemic.
Unfortunately homophobic attacks/abuse are on the increase.https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-wales-60257602

I genuinely couldn’t care less and it wouldn’t even enter my mind.

Sadly though I know that I am in the minority and far too many others would make a massive issue out of it.
I don’t think you are mate. Unfortunately knob heads are incredibly loud. People who live and let live can’t compete in volume.

I think there will be little negative reaction at grounds. You'll get a few doyles shouting abuse but they'll soon shut up if they get little support. Even the darker corners of social media will tire of it after a few days. It's not really an issue amongst younger people.

Gary Lineker says he knows two gay Premier League stars and hopes they will come out at Qatar World Cup

The former England striker says he knows two Premier League footballers who had been "very close" to coming out before now, adding that "it would be great if one or two of them came out during the World Cup".

Gary Lineker has claimed he knows two gay Premier League footballers and said it would be "amazing" if they chose to come out during the Qatar World Cup to send a strong message to the host nation, where homosexuality remains a crime.
The former England striker and TV presenter told the Daily Mirror the players had been "very close" to coming out before now.

"It would be great if one or two of them came out during the World Cup. It would be amazing," he said.

"I know for a fact that some have been very close and contemplated it. There's a couple I know, but obviously it's not for me to say who they are."

The tournament kicks off on 20 November in Qatar - a nation where same-sex sexual activity is punishable by seven years in jail, or even death by stoning for Muslim men under Sharia law.

On Thursday, Qatar's World Cup chief Nasser Al Khater sought to give assurances to LGBTQ+ fans that they would be welcomed at the tournament
While Qatar is not prepared to change anti-LGBTQ+ laws to respond to concerns of visiting fans, he has insisted none will be discriminated against during the 29-day tournament and that gay fans will be allowed to hold hands.

Why applaud it? Its part of society and by applauding it just labels them as different. In a world where we all just need to get on and remove labels, we need to stop recognising differences and accept them as equals.
I think what we need to be doing is pulling out of competitions like the World Cup being held in Qatar.. FIFA should be doing much more in that respect. The decision of EUFA to ban the Rainbow lights at the stadium in Germany order to appease Hungary after they passed anti gay laws. As much as you or I may have opinions on what should be applauded or not.. these governing bodies need to get their acts together and make sure that no one is discriminated against because of their sexuality by not supporting those who condemn. The sponsors should pull their funding to these governing bodies when they fail to do this, they should request their monies back and sue for damages. Not many companies now not dishing out the rainbows.. but when it comes down to it they are still supporting the politics of hate.

Gary Lineker is a bit of a dikc head really!! Why should these players put themselves at risk during this world cup. HE should come out and say that HE will not lend his support to a World Cup being held in Qatar. Don't be telling young lads to stick their necks on the line if you're not willing to take a stand yourself!

He hasnt put anyone`s head on the line nor told them to.

Whether you think he is a "dik" or not isnt relevant.
Being personal doesnt help those players he`s talking about.

It highlights the attitude in the game that being gay in football is a problem for football and always has been.

I will be boycotting the world cup because of the medievel views held by Qatar around sexuality, women, human rights etc. This highlights clearly the competition is just about money making, and nobody cares about the decency, understanding and compassion element to this.

More people should make their feelings clear around this and let the world see how backward and brutal this government is.

Applaud because of the immense brave character shown. To show support to show that we are not like social media with hurtful comments.

Players don’t think they can do it, otherwise it would have been done on a regular basis. Show support to the first people doing it and people might be able to feel more comfortable about sharing with the world who they are

I don't think someone should be applauded for being gay, but the last bit of your post is the issue - they aren't seen as equals by a certain portion of society hence the reason it is a bigger deal than it should be. By showing acceptance and kindness to the people who are brave enough to take the first step towards making this "normality", it may encourage others to do the same and ultimately achieve what you say in your post. Once that happens, it is no longer a big deal and nothing needs to be made of it.

I'm almost certain the studies on this have shown that the reporting of attacks, and therefore the recording, has increased significantly but the number of attacks/abuse hasn't increased. It has always been there. I don't know if online counts in these numbers but people didn't report those sort of things in the past but there has been a big shift in the way things can be reported on social media which would account for a significant increase.

That is true, but I guess it also helps show the true measure of discrimination that is still out there.
