One team to win the World Cup

For me it would have been the 1974 Dutch team, I thought they were awesome..

I'd have liked to have seen how them winning the competition would have changed Dutch & European football esp... I think England would have found the passing & technical game far quicker than we have..

** they were still great in 78 though was just a game too far for them v Argentina..

Reasons why I won't be watching the world cup. The hypocrisy of the money makers, well known sanctimonious, virtue signalling footballers who like to take the moral high ground but the temptation of millions of pounds of blood money proves too much. The deaths of those poor construction workers which they have tried to cover up or minimise. The backward medievel laws. And not being able to watch Italia. The world cup will not be the same without the Azzurri.

I can fully go with all of that, - this world cup - will be like no other for me, I like Denmark's minimalist shirt.... maybe them to with this year, if other than England..

However I was thinking - which team from any time, to have won the World Cup.. that didn't..

Will check out Denmarks shirt, I prefer minimalist to the gaudy designed shirts these days. Ive always loved the Brazil shirt, closely followed by Argentinas.

But I think the obvious answer is Hungary in 1954.

The best team in the world at that time, and a real golden generation, the fact they lost in the final was a huge upset.

Puskas says that they got overconfident after going 2-0 up and stopped performing properly.
They also had a late equaliser wrongly ruled out.

The Brazil team from the 1982 World Cup for me! Amazing going forward but sometimes forgot they had to defend too.

I loved both 74 & 78 world cups, Holland were my team in both tournaments & desperately wanted them to win

Remember when they got the early penalty in the 74 final, I was a 13 year old jumping all over the front room, for me they were the team of that world cup, recall them taking Brazil apart, 2-0 IIRC, the cup was theres, unfortunately it wasnt though

Dont recall as much about their route in 78 other than for me they were still the top team in the tournament & again losing in the final to Argentina

Ideally 1982 should have been a France v Brazil final.

Two exquisite midfields

Platini - Tigana - Giresse - Six - Genghini

vs

Zico - Socrates - Falcao - Eder - Cerezo

Obviously would pick England.

But if England aren't an option, I would go with Argentina 2014 purely to see the greatest footballer ever lift the trophy, after winning Player of the Tournament.

Scotland 78
Interestingly I was listening to an interview with Martin Tyler yesterday and he said he'd been told not to go to basically every world cup since this one (when Argentina was ruled by a dictatorship and sending a team/attending was seen as an endorsement of said dictatorship). He said it has also happened at various world cups since, but pretty much all since 2010.
