Old knacker now "Classic cars"

I am just watching Wheeler Dealers and they've just paid 4k for a knackered fiesta 1300.
It made me think about ( knackered and second hand) cars I've owned that are now worth somethng, which is pretty much every car I bought in the 1980s.

I've had a fiesta 1300, BMW M 5 shark nose,
Reliant Scimiter and my bother had a Capri 2.8i
My neighbour in London in the 80's was selling a Mercedes gull wing from the 1950s , they wanted a few thousand for it but this was too much for me back then, if only!
I wonder if other board members have had "classics" and if they've missed an opportunity or lived to regret selling.

Once owned an MG Metro.

Definitely not a classic due to the fact is was completely sh*t. Wouldn't have survived to this day, expect it would have simply crumbled to dust.

I Think that was the outcome for most of the 80s classics, hence why you get top dollar now. However they were also more affordable back then, people werent so bothered about them and you could pick them up cheap.
You'd get 7 k for that now, if you'd kept it in your living room.

Interestingly the Fiesta on Wheeler Dealers has been nicked, something that also happened a lot in the 80s.

Cars I have had that are worth a lot now.

2.8i capri special - about 80k in mint condition.

Escort Mexico - 50k in mint condition

Triumph dolomite sprint - about 5k,even though they are rare.

Vauxhall viva - no idea but the speedo has got to be worth 10 grand alone.

I am rebuilding my rx8 at the moment. Will take about a year and a half. Probably about 10k when rebuilt.

👌

I bought my Porsche 924 for a few hundred quid about 20 years ago, I just kept it going, do the odd show in it and it is now worth something like a few thousand. I just like driving it, it's a pretty car that always gets lazily dismissed "poor man's Porsche" and such like but they are quite rare now. "How Many Left" says that when I bought it there were over 5,000 now there are fewer than 700.

As ICE cars disappear into the history books get yourself a cheap classic, they're great fun, you meet nice people out in it and it is very "green". Oh, and by any measure driving a 40-50 year old Porsche is greener than any EV...

Always a storey attached to old classics.
Fiesta: I think it was a cut and shut.
Capri :engine blow up in Blackwall Tunnel East London.
BMW :window got stuck down in monkey enclosure in Chester zoo.
Scimiter: back of seat used to fly back when you accelerated so you ended up flat on your back, not good with a ford v6 engine.
Didn't have the same build quality as cars now.
That i didn't pay more than 3 k for any of them.

Nova SR 1.3 (poo brown-ultra rare)
Cavalier SRI (old shape slope back)

I’ve got a 20 year old MG TF, lost count of the number of times blokes have told me how sh*te they are and the imminent head gasket leak. Not too many of them left in the same colour which might enhance the value a bit. I’ve looked after it for the 15 years I’ve had it and with the current prices, I might have lost £1000 over that time.
I’ve thought about selling it a few times but it puts a smile on my face when I go out in it.

I had the Viva GLS with twin round headlight and round Speedo and rev counter… the Speedo never worked so I learned my speed in revs lol…

Stopped the cylinder block down and ground the valves seats and adjusted tappets etc…

Was only 8 yrs old when I had it but it looked about 20 yrs old… lad that bought it off me wrote it off on way home so never found the egg in the radiator sealing a leak 😂

I had a H reg Porsche 911. So what's that 1990

Anyway had it for 2 years sold it for about 1500 more than I paid.

Worth a bloody fortune now if I had kept it under a blanket since

For clarity I have an rx8 now, still pretty cool and a 2ltr diesel mondeo, not so cool. I have had 3 mondeos, a vectra, a golf, a 1.3l mk1 capri, loved this one, a puegot of some description, the maestro van den plas, the one that talked and had a full digital dashboard, crap car, cool features, mk4 spitfire. Think thats it.

Quite a mixed bag
